But the best thing about building PHP/Javascript browser games is...they are realistic! And I mean that from a project standpoint. You can just learn a couple of spoonfulls of PHP, plan out your game a bit, and get started while learning enough Javascript down the road for some needed effects.

Believe me, it sometimes pains me that both this community and MMORPGMaker have joined the ranks of those who originally drove us to make our own communities years ago: those who say that making a 3D MMORPG is too much work, too hard, and to do something else. But you know what? It is actually good advice. Over all these years, we have seen countless people start 3D MMORPG projects, and I believe only 2 or 3 projects are actually going and may be completed. And those are very talented, experienced developers who have been making indie games for nearly a decade or longer. The other thousand something people got bored when things slowed down, or got totally discombobulated when things grew too difficult and quit.

I'm sorry if we were a bit confronting, but it isn't that a good idea to make a 3d mmo.

From my perspective, it is better to have a good browser-based mmorpg (PBBG) than a 3d mmorpg.

For 20% of the effort, by making a PBBG, you get 80% of a 3d mmo.

I know I am one here who tried to make a 3d MMO, and failed miserably. I failed because I didn't understand the logic behind the multiplayer side. I didn't understand how to get one player to see another, or communicate via chat, so on and so fourth, and I am using Unity 3D. However, I decided to take that same game, and make it single player now, then learn how to do a simple mulitplayer, that people can play over a lan, and eventually work that same project up to an MMO, and it WILL take a LONG time to do it, but I realized that I had to start simple.

You cannot run without learning how to crawl then walk. And by looking and guessing, you are trying to do just that. Learn from Halls tutorials, he will help you crawl to get you started, then from there you have to learn to walk before you can run. We have all been there...we are just trying to help you! :)

Thanks to all for your help! ;)

Browser games, yes are realy cool! but i bet in the future and the future it's 3d "to much big brands sell 3d televisions now" to much brands bet in 3d becoming more defined.

And browser game it's good to entertainement but does not give the sense of "being in the game."

My project to superhero-mmorpg it's simple, and consist of:

1 - On character creation you found this:
3 types of men: normal, narrow, strong. like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHudPJ_yQUw
3 types of woman: normal, narraw, strog. and this: http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=8436

2 - 3 or 4 classes: type... might, fire, sorcery, telephaty.

3 - Ambient of the game it's one city.

sorr my englsih...and thanks! :D

wrong....

I have played many games that have made me a part of the game ore than a 3d game.
Whats more of being apart of the world?

killings 100 rats for their tails
or
owning a kingdom and having to raise crops, armies, supplies and battle other players

secondly you think in the future browser games will be obsolete because of true 3d?? really? so your game is going to be true 3d enabled?

Browser games will not lose popularity for many man years and if you plan for that it is sudden doom. With WebGL and HTML5 the world of gaming is going to the browser. Large download client based games are soon to be extinct.

Anyways I wish you luck on your game. Never give up. That's the key.

Actually, it is going both ways.

The current market is displaying a trend of bipolarity. The poles are the mass-markets and niche markets. Both are enormous.

Owing to Moore's law, in 5-10 years time (from a year ago), iPhones and Black Berries will be a "give-away-with-a-two-year-service-contract phone handed out by the millions in the Third World in 2020"

The market for current products in both poles will increase, not decrease due to the expanding population with access to technology.

Pax.

edit: There is no "best browser game", currently, I would think that most PBBGs are targeted at the niche markets. Games targeted at niche markets have a special pulling force in their markets and will have a proportionately higher player share. What I am trying to say here is that it is easier to find a browser-game that is literally made-for-you (and hence you will play nearly unconditionally), than it is to find a 3d one.

Mass-marketed ones are different. Such include: oGame, Darkorbit, runescape(browser-3d),travian,evony,etc.

What everyone is trying to tell you is :

3D MMORPG
  • Need to be an experienced coder in a language like C++.
Takes YEARS to develop a good one ( and by your comments you want a good one ).
Extremly difficult to keep a team together to accomplish this.
Not a good choice for your first project.
Hosting a game will be extremly costly if you envisage thousands of players.
The cost of buying a licencse for a engine can be high.
Browser Based Game
  • Need some html, css and php all relativly easy to learn.
Can take a few months as opposed to years to develop.
Better chance of keeping a team together for a few months.
Good choice for your first project.
    Hosting is relativly cheap.
Most software you need is free.

Have a look at the cons and pro's of each option.

Also remember most people in this forum (Except me) have tried to make a 3D mmo and are speaking from experience.

Honestly, if you are making a text-based game (and most browser-based RPGs are), you really don't need a team at all if you are at least decent with web development (which isn't that hard to learn).

For my project, I just downloaded a basic, freely-usable HTML/CSS template and have been adding my code to that. I could literally complete my entire game and put it up for hundreds or thousands of players to play (using a professional web host) without the help of a single other person.

EDIT: And what people have been hinting at and outright saying in this thread, teams are one of the most difficult parts of 3D MMORPG development. It is extremely hard to get a team together who can complete an entire 3D MMORPG, and it is probably about a 1 in 1000 chance to hold them all together for the 2 - 5 years to actually complete the 3D MMORPG.

I wonder if there's a partial middleground - like as much as a browser game can show a gridded map, could you have some flash program or some other thing that instead of showing a 2d character on the screen, it shows a 3d one?

That might be a good middle ground?

Not to mention diablo did pretty well for itself.

It's cool how it's that way, isn't it! :D
