I just wanted to tell anyone that is searching the site, or reading the information here, that this is the place to be if you would like to start your own game. I knew a bit about php when I started here. Nothing about creating games though. If I could classify my level of learning, it would be a 10 out of 10 from what used to be a 2 out of 10.
I started watching the youtube videos first. Then I downloaded the basic script that the videos covered. From there I just added on to it and asked questions here. There has been nothing that hasn't been solved as of yet. Everyone is very knowledgeable and helpful here. Nothing asked is too little or stupid. The only thing stupid really, is not asking
Although I receive much help here, I have also searched days upon days on Google. I have learned from many different areas. Only now do I wish I had kept a record of my start til now, so I could share those with you, but lesson learned
I just want to be enthusiastic about any new person scouring the forums, reading the information, or watching the videos... That you can learn how to create your own game fairly easy if you have the desire and devote some time in doing so. I went from zero knowledge of writing a game, to having a fairly simple game already written. It's not a quick job either. It takes much time to create your own game. I kind of wish I would have started with asking other gamers what would be a good start to a basic concept for a game, or what they would like to see in a game. But I'm a go getter
So my suggestion would be to come up with a concept and a round a bout idea of the game you would like to write or even play yourself. Then ask other gamers what would be good features and such. Then start watching videos and asking questions as you begin your adventure. I would also suggest in learning the process before attempting any game engines. This is just a personal thing on my part. I am one to have to know how things work, and having an engine would not show me that. I personally wouldn't learn what I have learned now, if I had an engine to do all the work for me. But I do believe that if I started with an engine now, I'd be 100% better off than where I was a few weeks ago. Besides, there is nothing more pleasant and exciting than creating something that YOU did, not what an game engine did
And don't get me wrong, game engines are a great tool from what I've seen. And many don't have the time to sit and write every bit of code. But, as stated, it's a personal thing on my part. I have the time to learn and think I'd be better off learning it before I started an engine. Which I may in the future.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that anythings possible, and you can get that game done here. Everyone's great! If you're truly interesting in starting your own game, then you're in the right spot YAY...
