Podcast?

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

Anyone have any experience in making them? Hosting them?

I have a 25 minute commute back and forth to work and have been listening to many different types. Would love to make some of our own but not sure that is a great idea.

No experience here. I guess we could talk about development in general, but it would be hard to actually talk about any code with no visual element.

A "radio show" usually lasting 30 minutes or so that you can play on your mp3 player or cell phone. Originally they were for Ipods hence the "podcast".

Talking about code isn't as hard as is it seems. Sure you cannot teach people how to write a program exactly but can discuss tips and good practices.

I was thinking of doing a mix of Coding news, Off topic, Indie-Games, Role Playing type games or MMORPGs, and similar subjects.

That is true!

Oh, and about podcasts, the thing that confused me for a long time back when the term first came around is that podcasts are basically just downloadable, pre-recorded MP3 radio shows. I was caught up on the idea that it had to be live somehow, and was wondering how on earth that would work (this is pre-iPhone and iPod Touch, so no iPods had Internet connectivity at the time). Then finally I realized I was over thinking it lol.

Yeah, you could talk about the members games, community, contests etc. I see, but what i dont get is why you need a host for it.. why not indie-resource.com? Then someone creates a simple HTML5 Website with all the podcast episodes that can be downloadable or heard in the website live.

It could be something live but recorded. Live for the people that were listening in the recording moment, and then the people who missed it, just download and listen to it :)

I keep thinking a live stream would be better to explain code and stuff.. at least you could show the code and examples. Just an idea :D

Putting out live streaming audio was tough the last time I looked into it. That was a few years back, so maybe there are more concise, user-friendly packages to help you with it, but it was still quite difficult.

100% prerecorded would likely be better, at least until its popularity picks up.

Overall though, I think a podcast is quite a good idea. I would love to hear a podcast about indie game development, and I think it could bring more people to the forums for sure :D
