Working to learn

Post by Qjedi »

Hi, I'm QJ!
I have been playing text-based PBBGs since 2004 (holy crap, that's a long time) and have been wanting to learn to develop them for quite awhile.
I have helped out on a few different games, but I really need to start branching out and making my own.
I have the most admin experience with your basic McCodes-style games, but they are so buggy I am hoping to move on.
I'm looking for info on free text-based code sets like Black Nova Traders and Dragon Knight, both of which seem usable for me, but require more modification techspertise than I have developed over the years.
If you know of a good PBBG code set that is free, let me know, I want to go play with it, even given my near-total lack of code skills.

What do I have to offer?
A firm grip on ergonomics, flavor text creation, world-building, playability, troubleshooting, marketing, and income generation. If you want help with some of that stuff, let me know!

Why am I here?
I recognized hallsofvalhalla from some videos I watched about game design and programming awhile back, and there are some game developers here who have products I am interested in trying, even helping them develop their game in a more fun and playable way.

How did I get here?
I was just searching for good resources to help me learn to develop my own 'special' style of game.

If you want my MSN, just ask me in a PM, I check my hotmail every day, and am on my MSN from time to time.

I don't know everything there is to know about using the internet, but I have a lot of fun working to learn stuff! ~QJ

Thanks for the warm greetings! :D

I've been looking through the games on here a bit and am learning my way around the forums. I found a few old threads where he asked people to go look at stuff and see if there are bugs (Pre-Alpha and/or control tests) but nothing playable yet.

Any suggestions for games I should try first? :geek:

I actually redid a mod of Black Nova Traders and got it working for the newer versions of PHP. I have it downloadable somewhere on here.

Create a good game, market it, make your fees affordable, keep improving your game, listen to your players for what they want.
Make sure to allow people to be able to buy Donator Packs (or whatever) with real money and with a (hard-to-get) game resource.
Have a good chat be a part of the game, social interaction is important and helps you gauge a LOT of what you need to improve.

Those three lines are the most important part of "Making money with a game", at least in my experience.

If you would like me to come look at what you have and help develop any aspects of your game, marketing plan, and long range goals, I'd be glad to help.
