Quests Of Crocania(Text Based)

Have a project in the works but not much media? How about an idea you are turning into a project? Maybe a game design document you want to start with. This is the place.

Quests Of Crocania(Text Based)

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

Quests of Crocania is my latest web browser game. It is a non graphical Text based game. It is more simple to play than a MUD but still has RPG elements. Players explore, build, quest, and fight in an immense world known as Crocania. There are 3600 explorable areas per zone and currently 4 zones. 12 zones are planned after beta and the option to add well over 50 zones per server.

I wrote the engine in about a 2 week span. It has several features now with many more to come.

Player owned Houses
Player Owned shops
Guilds
Spells
Psionics
Town System
Rings and Amulets
Weapons and armor with a strength and weakness system
Message system
Chat system
Exploration system
Living growing world
Quest system

and many more not listed or coming soon

Currently the game is in Pre-Alpha but I am opening alpha applications early. You can PM your app here. The forums are in the members games section.

It is important to remember that I am building a text based browser game here. No flashy graphics. It is a fun RPG type game where you build your character and become part of the world. You can choose to become a merchant and buy shops or become a king and build towns, or even a guild master. One main building block I wanted to design in this game was simplicity. Have all the features of a good open ended RPG but make the learning curve and GUI simple.

Pre-Alpha will contain a few features, most listed, and be a basic testing of the server and system. All testers will be rewarded and some may win a shop or mayor of current towns.

Looks neat, imo. I'd love to test it. :D

finished the Event system. Threw it in at last minute. Basically gives different outputs on events like lumbering and such. All based on skills and randoms.

Each location only has so many resources but they grow back over real time. The less it has the harder it is to get the resource.

got some more done today. When a area gets upgraded to a town it automatically gains a Inn. Players must choose a Inn or can bind to a new inn so when they die the get sent to that inn. Also the money from the inns go to the town fund where the town officials can use it for upgrades. The mayor chooses the inn price. Harder areas on the map will charge more but also have better shops. Searching, hunting, and lumbering are finished also. Cities with walls do not allow encounters.

Speaking of death, have perma death!

Nah, it doesn't work out for a variety of reasons.

But have you considered something like your character gains an NPC friend early on, and you have some chat options with him (simple stuff like what does he like and maybe he asks what the player likes, etc) and this chat grants some small bonus, so it's mechanically important as well as in a roleplay way.

Anyway, instead of the PC perma dying, each time the PC dies there's a percentage chance an ill fate kills the NPC friend instead.

The idea is that the player gets attached to the NPC to some degree and this gives death meaning, instead of sitting out of play for ten minutes or losing a bit of gold.

interesting idea. I have not thought on what death brings yet. Through alpha though it will just return you to the inn.

I have a plan for pets and hired henchmen.
