Honestly, if you are making a text-based game (and most browser-based RPGs are), you really don't need a team at all if you are at least decent with web development (which isn't that hard to learn).

For my project, I just downloaded a basic, freely-usable HTML/CSS template and have been adding my code to that. I could literally complete my entire game and put it up for hundreds or thousands of players to play (using a professional web host) without the help of a single other person.

EDIT: And what people have been hinting at and outright saying in this thread, teams are one of the most difficult parts of 3D MMORPG development. It is extremely hard to get a team together who can complete an entire 3D MMORPG, and it is probably about a 1 in 1000 chance to hold them all together for the 2 - 5 years to actually complete the 3D MMORPG.
Very true, I am working solo on my browser game.

My comment is more to do with what he would like to achieve, while it may be possible to do this alone I doubt he would achieve the highly polished commercial product he is looking for (Alone).

While I am working "Alone" on my game, If I cannot find something that I want I would hire someone to do it for me. I can do simple graphics etc in photoshop, but if I wanted something very specific created I would hire an artist. In the same light, if I didnt want to use music that was free I could hire someone to compose a theme song for me.

For the html/css you can try w3schools or just google and you will find many tutorials.

For the PHP and how to you can start here : http://indie-resource.com/forums/viewto ... =33&t=1543 , Hallsofvalhalla has made some great video tutorials which show you how to create a browser MMO. Once you have worked through the videos and understand everything you should have enough knowledge to adapt what you have learned to create almost any type of browser game.

If you want to make something like Runescape, you will need to learn Java.

You can also use Unity 3D, to do something similar...

But then again, we are starting to talk about 3D MMORPG development again. Didn't we already come to the conclusion that was a bad idea ;)

Andre, take a look at Torn City, an extremely popular browser-based RPG. Typically when we talk about browser-based RPGs, that is the kind of game we mean. It is also a good type of project to start with as a beginner, and it is also the type of game that the video tutorials show you how to make. These type of games are also very popular. Torn City has over a million players, even though it looks rather basic, and it makes over $50,000 a month in profit.

I was just saying on the comment, if you want something like Runescape you need to learn Java, and I was pointing out that Unity can do something like Runescape and don't need to know Java. Nothing more.

I am in full agreement, one shouldn't pursue a 3D MMORPG as a first project, it is too much to take on as your first.

Pursuing a 3D MMORPG as an unfunded indie is a bad idea anyway.

Sorry, I was really meaning that to the OP, not you. It just came out that way with the quote.

Seconding this - Halls tutorials really helped me and if you want to start making a game like the crims, you start from a small base and build up, like your building a house.

After you've looked at the first five videos and followed the instructions, (which doesn't take long), if you want to go in a different direction to the video's I made this tute to help clean up some loose ends (that are solved only after quite a few videos) http://indie-resource.com/forums/viewto ... =26&t=1353

Check out the tute video's then say what you want help with next :)

Remember it's like building a house - one brick at a time!
