I'm thinking of starting a new project something like this. RPG and pixel art roguelike game.
So far I've been checking around Game Maker only and was wondering can game maker do this kind of thing? including the multiplayer things.

if not can you suggest me one free engine that can do that
doesn't have to be user friendly, I will put time to learn everything first.

Game Programming is a series in which we take an in depth journey through every line of code that goes into a game similar to Realm of the Mad God. In short, we make Realm of the Mad God from scratch in Java, in great detail.

Currently 111 videos in the ongoing series. It isn't finished and he has been busy with college and exams but I think it's probably more than enough to get you started. Even if you don't do Java, the fact he explains what every line of code is doing means you can implement in whatever language you do know.

True, but it would probably be a better option today than to write it in Flash like RotMG actually was. I assume you could do something like that in HTML5, but may run into some problems without UDP sockets.
