Pompeii (film)

Post by Jackolantern »

So the wife and I went to see this in 3D last night. Not so much because we thought it was going to be great, but just because we wanted to get out and that was about the most entertaining-looking thing playing.

It was decent, I guess. I thought it was going to be more of a disaster movie, but instead, it spends about 85% of the film on this story of a ruler's daughter and a horse-whisperer slave, with Mt. Vesuvius rumbling every once in a while to remind us why we are sitting here watching this. It tried in very textbook ways to make you care about the characters, but it just didn't work. The villain was way over-the-top, and why he is even the villain wasn't shown in the film, but rather alluded to in a visit the daughter took to Rome earlier. The motives of the characters are off-balanced and unnatural feeling. It was also incredibly predictable, and I figured out the ending almost scene-by-scene about 20 minutes from the end.

Again, I wasn't expecting much, and it did have some nice 3D special effects once Vesuvius finally erupted. But if you are familiar with ancient history, and Rome in particular, you will be pulling your hair out by the end of this one. There are far too many inaccuracies to name. Even some geological inaccuracies as far as the eruption.

I couldn't recommend it.

It would be funny to see you guys tear it apart, but not worth it to subject yourselves to it. You both would absolutely hate it lol

To be clear I typically hate action movies. I hate every super hero movie, etc. So any action movie already has a strike against it for me. However, I feel this movie would have even been heavily unbalanced for action fans. It starts out as a ham-fisted historical romance, and then turns into an action-disaster movie.

Worth a download? No, at least not in the USA because there is always a chance of getting a DMCA warning from your ISP, and it isn't even remotely worth that. In other countries? Maybe if it is still the wild west the way the US was ten years ago.
