Cicada 3301

I don't know if any of you have heard about this, but for me personally, it is one of the most fascinating things I have ever come across. Basically, it all started with an image on a Reddit or 4Chan board (I can't remember which), and the rest is history. There was a hidden message in this image, which led to another image, but then as people got further and cracked more codes, it became more difficult. The people behind this must be unbelievably intelligent, not to mention a global organization. A picture was put out at 6 or so locations around the world that all needed to be found to progress at one stage.

You couldn't make this stuff up lol, it's like out of a movie. Cicada 3301 2014 is currently underway, fascinating stuff.

This wiki page will explain most of it, scroll down to "What happened 2012" and the same for 2013, I wanna know what you all think. It's really been bugging me who or what is behind this. I highly doubt it is a recruitment scheme for the NSA or any other security company, and I doubt it is an Augmented Reality game, any ideas?

Apologies, it is not any illegal activity. It's just a bunch of random puzzles that appeared on the internet. It's been getting a lot of media coverage recently and was wondering if anyone here knew what it was about. Sorry.

I have heard of this. It actually spawned from another game in the 90's that did the same thing. I will have to read back up on it to remember how the original worked but was quite fun.

I like how there are some pretty smart people on this world, i envy them as i wouldn't know how to even pass the first puzzle

If it's some kind of recruitment for something i believe the ones that reach the end are worth it!

Haha! It is an ARG, Chris. These things almost always end up being some kind of promotion for something, which is kind of what ruins the fun for me. Sometimes the long, drawn-out ones take years before you find out what product or service it is about.

I suppose that there is the possibility that it could be a well-distributed group that formed the idea on another website community. I mean, if this whole board decided to do something like this, we could have clues put up all over the US, Portugal, Spain, Romania (hey, we are super popular there), and I am sure elsewhere. The low productions values (ARGs often have Hollywood-like budgets) could hint to that.

In the end, I just can't get into this stuff. They try to be so mysterious, and then it just feels like a shot in the crotch when the "mystery" you have been following for years turns out to just mean "Drink more Ovaltine".
