Opinion on the following choices?
So I am making a game and I was wondering what you guys thought, I can either stop players leaving the canvas so having an out of bounds per say, or I could make them appear on the other side of the canvas, making it seems as though they have just gone around. Which one would you guys suggest?
Re: Opinion on the following choices?
It can depend on the type of game you are talking about. If they will appear on the other side of the map within a level it can be counterproductive to actual game-play. That being said if it's a whole world, and the map is large enough that it works well then... well the world is a sphere. Just make sure whatever you pick the map makes sense within the context of the actual level.

Say it's a game where you have to avoid some blocks, should I keep it closed or allow it to be open? Or alternatively shall I let them choose?Dominion wrote:It can depend on the type of game you are talking about. Like a side-scroller kinda thing? Are the blocks like running after you or falling out of the sky? Honestly I think regardless of the game, have it "off" so if you reach the end you just walk around and then if it feels dumb, put up borders.

The blocks are chasing you, I was told it all depends on the background so if I had a spacey background and I had stars animated then they could seem as though they are moving around when In in reality the same ones will be going from one side to another.

I would say both would be ok. The old asteroid game made you wrap around, while many others blocked you. It is up to you and what you feel fit better your own game.

Ergh, don't like the warp effect.
Here's an idea - there's a springboard on the side of the screen and if they go on it you get an animation of them rising high up, close to the overhead camera, then down again to the other side. Springboards can only be used every ten seconds or so (to stop people dodging blocks by just being in the air all the time)
Same effect, more plausible, funny. What else is there to like?

It totally depends on the game. The warp effect made Asteroids a legend, and added a genius extra level of depth to it. But would it work in other games? Probably not in most others. It is a case-by-case situation.
