Web Setup

Post by Xaos »

So I was thinking about getting a Raspberry Pi and use it as a web server. I've got a few questions though.

1. How different is it going through a RPI as a server/hosting than someone else? Does it make it more difficult, or even easier?
2. Cheapest place to buy a domain/best place? I (obv) wouldn't need the server/hosting, so I'd just need a cheap place to get domain names (or if its a bit more expensive and offers features, etc.)
3. Would it be possible to set up an e-mail this way, or would I have to do that in the purchase of the domain name>?

I use the Raspberry Pi as a WebServer and a Nodejs server and works well with both. Setup is no different than a normal LAMP install.

I use Domain.com for all my domains now. http://www.domain.com/

There are cheaper but they have been pretty easy to work with and 100x faster on setup than gocrappy. The domain should take of your email for you.

Hey halls, i need this too but more.

I want my raspberry pi to work as web server when i need only, i might even get a no-ip domain if i don't use it much, but i would also like to use it to watch movies and to use it as a minecraft / other small games server (this only when i want too, not 24/7). What you recommend? Raspbian still?

I definitely would not recommend a Raspberry Pi for a minecraft server but I could be wrong. If you plan on using it for a small webserver(not much traffic) and a media server with watchig an occasional movie, and a minecraft server that is not 24/7 then you might get away with it, however all three at once will be taxing.

I'm sorry to anyone that is not credited in the following reply.
I saw somewhere (thus the first paragraph) that a raspberry pi running minecraft server is perfect. I saw a blog post i think that was a "report" on a guy that did it, and he even said that a forest was on fire, they tried to use water to fight the fire and they ended flooding the forest with waterfalls and it still was running full speed without lag.

Now, ofc when i'll be using the mc server i would not be using the web server or the media server.

But my problem here is not the capacity, is the OS i should use to allow me to do all this without changing a SD card you know.. I only have one and it's a 8GB SD card. It has the RaspMC or something (XBMC) to watch movies, but i want to start that web server and the MC server and i can't on that "OS".

So raspbian is the best to do this all?

I used to watch movies on omxplayer, but it was a bit... how can i say this.. rudimentary? I mean it was no media player you know? And XBMC has that plus.

I fail to see how that thing could run a minecraft server (maybe single player). A 700 Mhz CPU with even the 512 MB of ram is not a lot for a minecraft server (Current record, I have had an MC server using 6 GB of RAM once).

Well in the tutorial the guy said 4 players were playing at 60fps, they even dig miles underground and the server was fine, and they catch fire to some forest and the server was good..

The current server I am paying for only has 768 Ram and it runs great. Of course that is only with about 4 players :)

Just grab one and find out.
