Interesting thing I never knew about my grandfather

Post by Jackolantern »

I found out something interesting about my grandfather I never knew until recently (years after he passed away). He was a programmer! He was actually a programmer for the U.S. Army in Oakridge, TN lol. He did punch card programming for the giant mainframes there. Apparently he hated punch cards so much (like many programmers of that era) that he never wanted a personal computer when they came out in the late 70's, and thus I never even knew he had computer knowledge lol. That and he only had something like a 6th grade education when he went into the military, as he was from the sticks lol.

Does anyone else have programmers in their family tree? It seems like such a modern thing, but I guess this just shows that someone younger than me may have ever had a programming great grandfather lol.

[python] In my day we used punch cards, and we liked it! [/python*]

Punch cards - wow. Interesting though how it shows intellect is hardly a matter of where you are born or that all education is the same - punch cards can not be an easy intellectual endevour!

Though halls is going to do a tute series on it, IIRC........... ......

Good story, Jack! :)

* No, not the programming language!

Tutorial series on Punch Cards....hmmm not a bad idea muhahaha

My Aunt was one of main programmers for Corel Draw back in the 90's. She sadly passed away in the 90's so I never got to talk to her about it.

Really? That is cool! Corel Draw came with my first real PC, and my sister and I used to mess around with it all the time :D

Most definitely! In fact, even in Adobe's early days, Photoshop was seen as the generic imposter to Corel Draw lol.

That is cool! I took computer architecture last semester, and good lord...the last thing I would want to do now is make a computer from scratch lol.

My grandmother was also a punch card programmer, but for private companies not the military.
