I don't need anything :(

Post by vitinho444 »

Hello guys, this problem is driving me crazy.

You know that the best inventions in the world, were created due to the "need" of the inventors..
In example: Youtube was created because there weren't videos of a nip slip at the super bowl or something in the internet.. (Btw i never saw that video 8-) )

The problem is.. i want to create something, but i figure.. I don't "need" anything... I don't need a app to help me save money, to do my TODO list nothing... So how can i create something good if I don't need it?

What you guys think, do you feel the same?

Nope, I do code when I need something or because I want to test something out. For example, I have in mind a game I would personally want to play, then I try to create it. Just doing something for the shake of doing it, nope not my kind. Ideas are usually the smallest issue. Concrete, clear and doable ideas is different. And yet finish your idea to make it a reality is even more difficult.

Depends what your developing. Normally you don't know it's "missing" until you have it. Take youtube, how many of you really "need" youtube or even facebook in your lives? My guess would be few of you, and yet it's there. Often it's about finding a gap in the market and exploiting it in such a way that you would use the service.

Yeah i see your point, i guess i'm creating games just for others.. And maybe I should start thinking about me first :)

I also agree with you, I'm currently developing games, but I don't code software for this reason.. I just don't need any software other than there already is :D

You say you don't need anything yet you are also saying you want to create something. You have a need to want. The best ideas come from need but the worst ideas come from greed. Always remember that. Go play some games, browse the net, get some inspiration.

Code something you like. You like to produce music? Then code some VST or full music tools. You like graphics? Then code yourself a GIMP or Blender like. You need small tools to automatically generate thumbnails and html out of a list of images? Etc... whatever you may NEED can be a good soft.

For games? Well, instead of trying to do things which are too complex for you, either for example because you don't have the art or knowledge, then start with something a bit simpler. You did a first tower defense. I take it as you like tower defense games, then why not make it simply in HTML 5, and make it a full game like gemcraft or the like? Yours is not bad but it's really like a prototype more than a full game.

I can have a hard time coming up with standard applications to build, because these serve a purpose, and once that purpose is filled, it isn't needed unless you can improve on it (and it is tough for a single dev to compete with Google/Microsoft or a large open source community). However, games are different. Games are entertainment, and the full purpose of entertainment is never filled. It is also a creative endeavor versus a functional one. There are always millions of untapped game ideas out there, but there isn't an unlimited supply of ideas to help business create spreadsheets.

Yeah i like tower defense games :) My game wouldn't be here if it weren't for your models man, I really loved what you did, and when it cashes back I'm thinking giving you full profit :) You deserve more.

Yes, nowadays it's very hard to compete with new ideas because i feel like everything i think was already created.. it sucks xD
I guess i just need to wait for the right one ..

There are plenty of people in third world countries starving to death or dying from basic deseases. There are plenty of people homeless, or families skipping meals in our own country.

Granted these feel 'abstract' as needs, because you can't really tell yourself you need to deal with them or your own life is at risk.

However, as part of humanities plight as a whole...

If you've made some games, it probably helps to play them atleast once a day, if not more often. I have a few basic ones (jump the oncoming object X times successfully) on my desk top. It reminds you of what you can do and you start playing with new ideas.

I'm beginning to suspect that lengthy planning is design suicide and it's better to write a tiny game and play it and while playing it, imagine what next part could be added on.
