[Discussion] Is it possible to create this?

Post by vitinho444 »

Hello dear community :)

In the next few days ill be testing my soon to be released second 3d game :)
It will be a tower defense game, just a casual one, and i hope it gets some attention to my company / group.

In the spare time i have been thinking about a new game to develop after this one, i will continue on the 3d market and i'm thinking in a FPS.. You must be saying: "Pff, one to add to the list" well no, i want to revolutionize the way people see FPS, and now you say "meh everyone tries that, they all failed", well it may fail, but i think i have gathered what i need to make a successful game like this one im thinking of.

I don't want to say much details on the ideas that i already have since they are not final, but i would like to start a discussion on this topic since i think it has more to offer to this game and many others that will come.

The thing is, i will base this game in 3 things:
Before you read this 3 topics, dont see it only for a FPS.

1. - Players, 100% focused on players and the community, this FPS will be made for players by players, and this is not just a slogan, it's true! If you think the game is not fare or not balanced report it! It will be fixed in the next update! Report anything you don't like.

I wrote this in a class, needs some word work, but the principle is there.. I want to make a game that is fare for everyone.. And in the case of an FPS i would like an FPS to get a weapon and kill a guy with some shots, not few, not many, something balanced. Also if i changed weapon i would like to kill him the same way and not take 2 more years to do so. Also if other guy is with the same weapon and i shoot first, i should kill first, and not get killed. Things like that always screwed me in FPS.

2.- 100% focused on the game! In our FPS, there will be one update every week! This weekly updates will feature new weapons, new maps, new game modes, bug fixing and more! If your report reach us 128 hours before the next patch, and it pass our judgement it will be added to the game in the next update.

This point is very important, since many games are focused on the money, i would promise to focus 200% on the game and players (the two most important things) and i would do weekly updates even if there was a bug to fix. Also i didn't mean to add a weapon per week or a map, those things take time, but some weeks there would be some new items ofc.

And now the third point:
3.- Price, This project is not the next CoD or the next Battlefield but it will be close to them in everything but the price. With all this promises and features you must think that the game will be paid or free to play with premium, well no. The game is 100% (i would say 300% to emphasize) free to play and there are no premium services or so. But there is donator packs that can be purchased to support the game, although it won't give you any in-game boost it makes your game more customized and mark you as a supporter.
These customizations i would say they would go from 1$ (simple camo) to 50$ (map/wep with donator name)

In this point i think the weak link is this part:
although it won't give you any in-game boost
I think it needs work since i dont see anyone paying for making the game prettier and not getting any boost. To change this i would add some special weapons but only used in another game mode specially made for those new weapons, so the free players don't get raped.

This is the basic 3 points of the game i would do. I want to ask you guys what you think, and what you would add/change and also do you think it can work?

My main goal is to unify the GAME_GENRE community in one single game that everyone is happy, because games are supposed to be entertaining and not stressful!

Thanks for reading. Hope you like it.

One thing that I think is a mistake is to give yourself time tables for updates, particularly "every week". This would have several consequences: Not everything can be done in a week, so you are capping how big of features can be added (sure you could work on it for weeks beforehand, but since there is supposed to be a release every week, there will always be things closer to release that need to be worked on). You are also setting yourself up for community problems. Sometimes it just won't be possible to get something out within a week, so you have now broken promises. And of course to try to keep from breaking those promises, things may be rushed which always leads to bugs that could end up infecting the whole game and reducing stability.

Aside from that, sounds cool :)

If you can label what you are trying to create with the word "this", then yes. A computer is as capable at virtually simulating reality as a human brain. In other words, anything your brain can think of, a computer can calculate.

(I think I stole that from some Microsoft product literature)

Ahh, sorry chris for being dumb ;)

Well i think the base of any (indie) game is the will power to make it, and maybe to improve the known games of some game genre, that's my case with this project. I think i will make a quick demo and make a kickstarter / indiegogo project to get some funding, since i need to see if i enter college this year time wouldn't be that much so a little money would help get things moving, nothing like seeing that your project is being supported / appreciated.

One mans fair will be another mans unbalanced.

You'll drive yourself mad thinking 'but I fixed this!' if you treat everyone as having the same idea of fair and balanced.

This is very true. I know this sounds very anti-player, but honestly the worst people to decide what is fair or not are the people who play the game. "Fair" is almost always seen by a player as what gives himr the largest advantage over others. Also, and I know it is cliche, but the grass is always greener on the other side. Every other class looks overpowered and needs to be nerfed until you actually play it. I remember back in Vanilla WoW, everyone on Alliance always complained about how overpowered the Horde-only class, Shaman was. And then we got them and realized that not only were they not overpowered, but they were one of the most underwhelming classes in the game lol. But if it had been up to us, we would have nerfed away basically every spell the Shaman had lol.

A better model for user-directed development is to allow players to vote on where free development time goes. Obviously a fair amount will go to general up-keep and bug fixes (and players need to be kept out of that process), but allowing players to vote on what new features get the highest priority out of a predetermined list of upcoming features is a good way to allow players to feel invested in the development of the game while still keeping development in your control (where it needs to be).

Yes i see that, also i had (didn't wrote it) a feature on the game's website that will allow players to vote (like you said) for the next features and bug fix for prioritization.

That fair thing as much things to say about it, i guess i was thinking like, you have an MP5 you won't kill with 1 shot, but maybe 4 will do the job depending on the hit location. I will base the damage and stuff with CSS that i think it's one of the best there is, per example you know that an headshot with the AK47 will kill you, and maybe 2 in the chest will do the job too, now in Call of duty is like you are praying to kill the guy and that sucks.

I still need work on my business models :)
