Reiner's Tileset is the old stand-by, as it has enough characters, monsters, zone props, buildings, etc. for basically an entire RPG in the same style (just browse under the "2D" section). They are also under a very generous license (if I remember, he asks for attribution, but doesn't require it, even in commercial projects). While several indie projects use it, they are really only commonly known to the indie RPG development community, and 99% of users won't recognize it.

Wow, nifty - mostly posting just to record this thread in my posts lists so I can reference this latter!

While those are nice, just to be clear, those are not licensed for any kind of use, and are technically "stolen". While its use is widespread through the indie community, I would highly suggest not using them in any even semi-commercial project.

EDIT: Ok, now I am actually not too sure what the license is after looking around. Who made RPG Maker? Tekepon.net? Because that is the site that has all of the sprites up for download, but it doesn't appear to be the company that made RPG Maker. However, the author of that site says it is "their material" and even list a license, but auto-translate from Japanese was not kind to it and I can't really tell what it means for commercial projects.

EDIT2: Ok, found the main RPG Maker site, and it definitely is not that guy running that site. They don't post a license, so I am assuming you have to get the license in RPG Maker. No idea what the legality of using it is, but I know I have heard dozens of times that all the use of the sprites is unlicensed. Who knows though?
