Game Idea - needing your input/advice

Post by pricey »

Hey everyone,

First proper post for you all so it maybe in the wrong place or just full of rubbish :D

Basically i have been playing an online text based game for a few years on and off, in recent times (2yrs or more) the developers have promised many things but poorly delivered little or bad updates that have little or no effect on the overall game. Many players on the game feel the same and are bored, hence my idea to recreate the game with my own improvements, alterations and variations.

Now i don't wish to blatantly copy the game like the names, images etc but i do want to keep the overall feel and familiarity. I think this project is going to be rather large for me to undertake solely so help is always welcome and appreciated.

I have looked into pre-made scripts and the idea of outsourcing the whole project but the scripts fall short of what i want from them and would require too much editing to make them viable and outsourcing isn't financially viable (tight git here doesn't like spending money).

So after all the above i started the idea of building my own script and came across Halls tutorials online which are by far the best to grasp the basic's.

I have a basic layout made using php to call in the different elements and have them all correctly aligned but it will require tweaking once the graphical interface is made (but that's light years away)

And i have created a mysql database which i am going to use elements of this have been taken from different sources and constructed into on db i am happy with (alterations etc will happen as i find errors or better ways)

So lets give you the link to the game i play http://www.vilecity.com come take a look and let me know what you think.

Am i being to adventurous? Plain dumb with an idea far greater than an average joe's knowledge? Or would anybody be interested in helping to create this along with me?

Regards
Mark

For a start, lightyears is a measurement of distance not a measurement of time :D

I can't currently get onto the game because I am at work, but I will look when I am at home

Ah.. but time can be relatively measured as distance in the fabric of spacetime.

distance is still the amount of time it would take me providing i was crawling backwards up a 80degree slope

Having done a bit more research i have found another script which seems to give me a better base to work from but it does have many security issue's and problems that need addressing :( looks like a lot of time reading and practising.

Yes but this only applies for physical objects, it is a measurment of how many years a ray of light takes to reach from point A to point B (or somthing daft like that). Henceforth, planets are measured at x lightyears away because it takes a light that many years to reach us from them or vis versa.

In this context this is a false statement, as the website has no physical location, only a virtual one.

Oh and that link dont seem to work

Way off topic here, but apparently humans perception of time is created by looking at a clock and seeing what "time" it is, or looking outside to see where the sun or stars are. This is wrong, time is not as we perceive it. Time is a measurement of distance. Hard to grasp (I don't understand it either) I just sort of learned to accept it, and either I'm constantly going more insane, or it seems to keep making more sense.

Light is physical matter, it can be broken into pieces and be put back together (the spectrum). You are also made of nothing more than energy, just like light is, you are made of clusters of energy if you will, millions of them put together that make up a particle. Light simply doesn't follow the same law, it is not clustered into quarks and further into an atom, it "moves" more freely, the law it has to follow however is that it goes through apparently one dimension. Which would seem to be controlled by time, but it isn't. I prefer picturing it as half a dimension, but anyway. We do not physically feel it with touch, we see it with our eyes. Which leads us to believe that time has something to do with "speed" light "travels" at. Time is however nothing else than what you could maybe first understand as a sort of displacement. The theory of quantum physics states that everything is at the same place = time, but yet seems to be at different places = times. This is what humans perceive to make "time". It's up to our minds to make sense of it.

Back on topic. This seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to remake, if you require any assistance there are plenty of people including myself that can help. Just don't hesitate to ask. One thing I would have to suggest, which is something people tend to overlook when starting a project, and something I have been emphasizing for the last half a year or so to everyone, is to become a ninja of the "time". Sneak up on your time with a planning or two. That will help you control it :D.

Planning and formulating is all the hard work done. After that comes the fun of putting it all together.

Things you will need to consider before making the planning is the planning of making the planning. <- Hope light and time make more sense now .

Yeah guys, I know it happened organically, but any physics talk should be taken to another thread ;)
