What do you look for?
When browsing through games online, what do you look for? What interests you? What draws you to try the game?

Re: What do you look for?
When it comes to MMOs, I am usually looking for an immersive, deep world. I also like to see skills and spells that are not the same old thing. I have mentioned the game several times before, but one of the things that initially convinced me to try Achaea, a MUD, was its spell list. It includes spells to secrete and use or sell tons of different poisons out of your "fangs", create and blow up voodoo dolls of your opponent by stealing a personal item from them, the ability to hypnotize other players and suggest to them to give you their belongings, and even spells to damn their soul to Hell.

Mmos- The most common things actually. I want it to be medieval, flexible player design, places to go, groups to join, and many skills. Oh and free
FPS- Amazing In-game Screenshot, First Person Always, Multiplayer in Anyway.
Flashgames - Popular, non-repetitive, non-puzzle like.
Racing - Has to be Need for Speed
lol
To sum it up I'm very picky on my personal Standards. I appreciate a game alot more with 3 main things, Camera Angle, Graphics, Physics, Multiplayer. If you can get those 4 things, you know I'll try it out, no matter how crappy it is. Also long as I like the angle, with ok graphics, If I don't hit every invisible wall, and if I can player multiplayer. I am in.

... I don't think you guys are following him.
I believe he's asking about browser based games, not video games. :/
Two different categories of games there..
one is realtime and usually 3D now a days.
the other is usually some kind of turn based and community based game.
Also stereo-typical Fantasy, Sci-Fi is just getting old.
When I was making a game I was thinking of classes that don't exist, such as drugs.
I've seen tons of criminal drug collecting games, but I've never seen drugs involved with Fantasy or Sci-Fi.
Things like that, make a game original and all you have to do is take two sub-genres and smash them together, and more then likely you will get something cool.
For me when I'm looking for any game it's for the PvP.
It has to be original, I can live with repetitive battles, but involving movement, blocking, stances and skills in the battles adds for non repetitiveness.
Customization, if I just have an avatar to my name where is the feel of achievement.
When you have a character that you can customize you have a sense of interaction with your own unit.
The less HUD seen the better in my opinion.
If you're able to fill the page with graphics as supposed to text then you're able to engage them visually as supposed to just seeing numbers everywhere.
The more numbers and words the player sees the more likely they are to get bored of the actual game.
At least thats what I find.
Also the idea of contribution from the player is always great.
When you feel like you actually have an impact on the virtual world, as in helping other players, effecting economy, politics, engaging the player with the story.
What I mean by that is involve the players with the storyline, change the storyline based on what the players are doing.
Events keep everyone happy, mini games are a great way to waste time so if you know how to effect sql variables with a flash game then you can basically make your own arcade games to keep players active.

Re: What do you look for?
Besides the fact that he is working on a browser-based game, I am not sure how else to infer that he is meaning a browser-based game. If that is the case, however, I will say that I typically don't play browser-based games or look into them very much. But this is not really a bias towards browser-based games in general. It is more that I have not come across any that have ever held my interest.

He mentioned that he meant for either or.
So I apologize for the mis-undestanding.
But yea, most MMOs video games I don't play because of 1 reason.
- The basic attack is an auto-attack.
I prefer to be able to control all of my actions, including even my basic swing of my weapon.

Re: What do you look for?
In many ways, I actually kind of prefer auto-attack. In a good MMORPG, you should not be relying much on auto-attack, and all group roles should have a fair bit of hotkey pressing to do. Between all those spells and skill button presses, I am glad that if I am not pressing anything else that I will still be making a basic attack.

Thats the point, I don't find skill bashing to be that entertaining.Jackolantern wrote:In many ways, I actually kind of prefer auto-attack. And the basic attack just becomes a weak after thought, I don't see why a basic attack shouldn't be deadly if used right.
Two people just standing in one spot usually doing crazy flips and crazy effects going on, to me this isn't appealing.
Auto-targeting, just not my cup of tea.
I have a melee setting of mind, I just want to get in your face and chop you up with a sword.
I'm just waiting for a decent First-person MMO.
Something that has you engaged and actually controlling your character.
Much like Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout, and Dark Messiah.
It'll happen, we've just got to be patient, or make it ourselves.
Also something I noticed very few MMORPGs have enough blood in them of course for the PG+13 rating but still.
Excuse me people you're CUTTING each other with SHARP objects, where is the blood?
There are only maybe 4 I can think of that go out of their way to be gorey.

Re: What do you look for?
Yeah, that is not my kind of game. I don't personally like FPS games, either. The manual-targeting aspect of Darkfall was the feature that sealed the deal that I will not be playing it. It seems to boil down that you can only have one or the other. If you have tons of skills and spells to use, you don't have time or dexterity to manually target and continuously click the mouse button to make a regular attack. If you have manual targeting, and continuous mouse clicking to attack, you won't have time for using tons of skills and spells. To me, the manual-targeting to use regular attacks side would just get too boring too fast.
