Design discussion

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

I have been racking my brain for months trying to come up with a PHP refresh RPG style. As in with PHP since its server side most changes must be done with refresh. Okay all changes. This adds difficulty in finding a style that players will enjoy and that hasn't been overdone. I have a billion ideas and a huge chunk of new code I want to implement but just can't find a play style to match.

Anyone run across a great RPG style or have a great idea about a gameplay they wanna share either publicly or privately(IM me).

I played this one for awhile. It's a single player RPG pertty much with MMO elements as far as being able to chat, trade and pvp with other players. I enjoyed it but all the cool features require you to pay so I stopped playing it.

K I recently been playing some older Final fantasy games like 1-3 and wow its amazing how fun they still are and how much I miss those old RPG elements. Games today have moved so far from them. Only thing that stinks is I am having to use a emu to play those old games yet they are so simple they would be easy to bring to the browser. Stick with the core single player feel and the idea of logging in and playing when you want but adding in some base multiplayer like chat, auctions, and a world that changes with the players.
Some questions I ponder though

1. Should it have a real time zelda style combat or the original ?

2. Would a job system be received well?

3. Would it be a game that the public would play? Would it draw interest?

4. Would it do better as a strict single player RPG or do better as a ever growing story mixed with some multiplayer?

5. Would anyone be interesting in working on a project like this?

My thoughts are a real time movement using javascript. Go to http://indie-resource.com/farmgame/login.php username: test password: test to see what I mean but I would make it a scrolling map.

I have been working on a few projects and am at the point where some are done and out of my hair and I really want to go back to my RPG roots. What started my fascination. I think this would be the best way. A no download, no plug in quick play RPG with a kick butt storyline

Yeah, those golden oldies allways perform well hehe. I suppose it can be done and yes i believe there is still a great number of people willing to play. It depends on the core functionality, if you manage to get something set up that works well and has good content and storyline, i`m pretty sure as a single player RPG this would work well.

Multiplayer can also be a real good thing to add. Not only action house and chat ( Diablo II ? ) but also have a chance to balance out a team and fight each other in a special designated arena ) Having said, you can have a ranked ladder too. But in order for people to actually play it, i still believe it has to be finished, or close to finished.

btw at your first post you said u can't find a style for your code or something like that..,
maybe if you don't make it RPG style, i got an idea for a game to try out but don't know
if it's something you would wanna make, but hum... hum... i might share the idea shall put it down on paper first..

are you still thinking about trying to make this game halls? Cuz I think it would be a great idea personally. And to answer a question that I don't think was answered earlier that you asked, I would make the fighting style like FF instead of Zelda. I love Zelda, but I think that FF style fighting would work best in this type of game.

Also, how did you make the health bar??? What program did you use, or did you find it online? (by how did you make it, I mean the graphic, not how you made it work).
Languages: C++, C#, Javascript + Angular, PHP
