Another chat/shout box thread!

Post by Callan S. »

I'm thinking of having it that even offline players have automated things they say into chat, based on offering missions and other stuff. What other stuff? That's partly why I'm posting.

So one example is that item X is needed to complete a mission or task. If a player with X comes online, the chat code will look for another player at random who has a mission requiring item X and will put up a message for that player, in the chat.

Basically all that's coming to me at the moment are missions like this. So maybe the player has item X, he gets a message and takes it, does the task, gets some money and item Y. Then someone else who has a task requiring Y gets a message showing up in the text. And so on, a few times, so basically the player interacts with the other players tasks a few times.

Now onto a different subject, same topic. I'm thinking of having a chat where you can only talk after buying the capacity to with game money. Say $1000. Also allowing anyone to moderate other players (mute them), but they have to buy the capacity with game money, say $2000. If they moderate, they lose their moderation money and so does the other person. Only once per day can you buy the capacity to talk or moderate, so once you lose the capacity to chat or use the capacity to moderate, that's it for the day, even if you have enough money to buy in again. This stops or reduces any use of the moderation system to actually bully other players.

Before you buy the capacity to chat, there are polls people can put in chat and the above missions, that you can respond to.

I like the idea of paying for chat, it helps prevent the blatant abuse of chat for spamming purposes. but if youre going to add a moderation feature you might as well just add a mute button which silences the messages from that person to the person who muted them. without costing anything or costing an additional small sum .. however your game works... but its a good idea. also.. the scrolling player has itemx in the chat might get old fast, what about sending a PM to the person needing item x from the person who has it automatically.? thats another simple and private approach to it.

hope this helps..

I don't think just putting someone on ignore is really sufficient, socially (especially in a small chat) - otherwise forums and such wouldn't have moderators, they'd just have ignore buttons (well, maybe mods for spam, but that's another subject)

I'm thinking of having two chat rooms. With the second one, you also see all the posts from the first. But the first one doesn't see the second ones posts. When someone is muted, they can still press a link that gives a message like 'Looks like I'm not wanted - I'll be in the second chat' (with a cool down of say a minute between when they can repeat that) so people know where to find them.

Basically this is because I don't want someone to have utter power to exclude someone else from the social space - yet nor do I want anyone being able to insinuate themselves into the social space regardless. So there's sort of a rough and tumble second chat/social space (but the first chat plays in this one as well).

i see your point in wanting the chat to be moderated to keep it friendly and clean. I have noticed some games actually seek out foul language in a chat string being submitted and **** it out so you cant read it. and some games even stop the entire string from posting all together then give the sender a warning along with a 5 minute cool down period before having the ability to chat again.

Buying chat privilege is an interesting idea. But I would set it up a slightly different way.
Local Chat = Free
Zone Chat = X
World Chat = 2X

I'm not really a fan of user moderation, but If you must have user moderation allow access to it using your forums karma system or something.

I agree about the price schedule. In my game guild chat will be free while world chat will be a small fee based on the games currency, right now i just call them tokens you can use them to buy stuff maybe like: 10x chat scripts for 1 token or something. im also going to allow ingame trading of tokens for other items like gold or gear but i havent decided on how to best do it. im either going to allow trading of tokens ONLY between players or i might put up a sort of marketplace where you can trade the tokens for a certain amount of gold or resources or vise versa.

I'm kind of basing it on how we moderate in real life conversations - you don't let jerks into your conversation. But as I said before, sometimes someone can use that power to be a jerk and ostracise someone simply for power reasons - that's why I'd have the second chat room. Anyone can go there to chat and the person moderated can leave a preset message in the first chat that they are there (once every minute or some time limit on it).

I even imagine that sometimes everyone would migrate to the second chat room and the first would be left empty. And that's cool - people have decided whether they want moderation powers or not, that way.
