I understand UV mapping, cutting the mesh, exporting it too gimp, ladeda.
the problem im having is making applying say a spaceship texture to it.
Do i just get a texture and lay it over the whole thing? do i cut it up somehow? do i make my own?(which id be screwed then because i cant)
my game me and my friends are working on is going rather slow because of the lack of a modeler, and i really need to step up and take the position, but i cant figure this out.

Depending on the program it should be quite easy. If there is a material editor or texture tab then it'll be straight through that.
I've yet to encounter a 3d modeling program that has a complicated application of texture system.

But if i export it to UNity will it stay? i heard you have to have UV maps when you export to Unity

To texture an object you have to have UV maps. When you export the model the UV maps will stay applied to the model, thus allowing the texture you created to be used with it as well.

see what im not getting, say i need to get several textures on a UV map, how do i get do that? do i just copy past the textures then cut them out?
See ive got UV mapping down, i can color the UV maps, but the second i try and put a texture on them. it all goes too hell
