Hey Everyone

Post by KingScar »

Hey guys,

My name's Ryan and I'm 19 years old living in Southern New Jersey. I've been into web design and game development since I was about 12 years old. I have a wide variety of skills in different languages such as, HTML(XHTML), CSS, php, MYSQL, JavaScript, Java, C-Lite, and C++. I'm very good and familiar with XHTML and CSS, I'm decent with php, MYSQL, and C-Lite, and I'm limited in JavaScript, Java, and C++. I've also messed around with numerous game engines and 3D modeling programs but recently, I've found in my opinion the BEST possible combination you could have which is Blender and the Unity3D engine.

The reason for my varied list of languages and skills is due to the different types of games I wanted to create throughout my "career". In the beginning, I just wanted to design websites and make them look cool, then I started playing text based browser games and thought, "this can't be THAT hard" and started to learn php and MYSQL and how to run them off of a WAMP server. Later, I just thought it would help my progression and how my browser game would turn out if I learned other languages that could be incorporated into a browser game so I started to learn JavaScript/Java but, realized it'd be much harder to try and learn php, MYSQL, JavaScript, and Java all at the same time rather then learn the bare neccessities first so I stopped learning JS and Java. After getting a good grasp on php and MYSQL, I found this site, which has helped me TREMENDOUSLY for the last 7-8 monthes with tutorials, errors in code etc. etc. and even though i don't know either of them personally, I'd like to thank Halls and Jackolantern considering, anytime I had a problem and came to this site searching for an answer it was usually one of them who made a post about it and how to fix it which is the reason I never needed to make an account on here =).

After just browsing this site numerous times I found different engines, sites, techniques, just a bunch of stuff and started looking more towards advanced scripting like C++ which I'd still like to continue learning. For those of you who most likely don't know what C-Lite is, it is a language as powerful as C++ but VERYYYYY easy to learn and use, I'd never heard of it until I tried the free version of 3D Game Studio because, C-Lite was created by the company who made 3DGS and Atari.
Anyways, like I said, I've wanted to create my own development team and create an MMORPG for a long time and feel like this site would be an excellent place to start considering from what I've seen from the community and how helpful everyone is so if anyone with knowledge of Blender and or Unity3D would be interested in becoming a part of my little adventure, I'd be more than happy to talk to you. I'm a pretty laid back, funny, outgoing, friendly person so even if you just wanted to BS about anything pretty much or needed help with something you could just PM me.

Thanks, Ryan

Thanks Jack! It's an honor for a indie-resource.com "legend" to be the first person to welcome me especially when he's one of the two people I mentioned in my first post. ;)

Haha anytime Jack.
And Halls, you're no dumby either, back when I was messing around with browser based games and trying to create one YOU were my guide! lol I can't thank you enough. :)
But yeah, I've lurked these forums for awhile and learned and been amazed by the communities projects.
I appreciate the welcome guys and as I said before, I can't thank you enough for the problems you guys have (unknowningly) helped me through! :D

Welcome to the community, and as Halls and Jack said, we are glad to have you among us! Everyone here is helpful in their own way and we will be glad to guide you in any help you need!

You chose to good pieces to use. Blender and Unity3D. I use both of those myself...and am finding that more and more people are going in that direction...

I look forward to seeing what project(s) your working on...good luck and again, welcome!

I really feel like Torque 3D missed the boat when it comes to browser-based gaming. As Halls has previously posted in various threads, the Torque 3D browser functionality is really useless, as it basically just makes a web page download the entire game and then launch it windowed in the browser. Unity 3D instead went with a real streaming launch system. This is becoming such a huge selling point and a large part of the game industry today that I believe Unity has picked up huge ground.

Thanks a lot SpiritWebb, I've noticed your name a lot around these forums too and your welcome is much appreciated. Also, I look foreward to seeing any future projects I may have as well...considering I'm a beginner at both Unity and Blender! lol
And Jack, I'm actually really happy you made that post because, you just finalized my decision on dropping Unity and trying torque. I didn't know much about torque, all I knew was that it was pretty expensive especially for a guy like me who can't find a job but, I was gonna try and get it some how because it looked really quite impressive but, Unity absolutely AMAZED me plus it was FREE! I guess I made the right decision afterall.
