The only way to keep a large amount of players and get some to pay for playing is to accept that not everyone wants to spend money. Those who want to should be given some cool extra features or privileges, but don't force a player to pay through annoyance or incomplete games or any such synthetic excuse.

Limited time, annoying popups, obstructive features etc are going to repel your players. Better to set up some ads and slowly build up an income through ever growing page views (if players stay, even if they don't pay, it will generate income). But if you get a few people to pay, but all the free players go somewhere else, you've achieved nothing.

Start with a free to play game, get a decent player base, set up a donation system, put in some ads, offer a premium account with some extra cool features (but they can't in any way limit the free players), add some micro transaction systems to allow some players to get small perks for real money. Combined they can give you a good income if your game draws players.

One game I used to play had all this except micro transactions. He offered active players extra daily resources by clicking a link that displayed some more ads, thus generating extra page views from most of the players.
