Eastern/Fantasy WIP

Have a project in the works but not much media? How about an idea you are turning into a project? Maybe a game design document you want to start with. This is the place.

Eastern/Fantasy WIP

Post by Last Known Hero »

Hate to create a topic on this but I have to so I don't start to forget things.

I am creating a Samruai/Fantasy blend game, this is just a hoby piece so I don't know what I want for it in the future. Basically there is going to be these classes:
- Samurai
- Ninja
- Some sort of spell caster
- A Warrior type class that is meant to take damage.
(There appears to be a contradiction but There are two factions: The Samurai, and The Ninja. You get to choose the faction you would like and then choose from the 3 classes for that faction, if you choose Samurai you can be a samurai, spell caster, or a warrior. If you choose Ninja, you can be a ninja, spell caster, or a warrior)

There are going to be power crystals that you find all over the place (on enemies, treasures, mining, etc) that you trade in for money, as these power crystals are the energy source for the fantasy part of the story. The Samurai and Ninja's fight for them. The Samurais fight for them to gain control over the supply allowing fees to rise, and the Ninjas fight for them so they can have control over the supply and use what they want.

Kinda sloppy but just writting ideas down for now.

Sounds pretty neat. For the spellcasters, you could use a Buddhist-style monk to keep with the Asian-theme. Japanese and Chinese mythology both have many legends of skilled monks performing magic.

I really like that idea, thanks :) Any ideas for what the damage takers should be named?

Samurai's start out to be lowly, trainees, and don't even own armor yet.
Ninja's are just peasants so they don't have very much to start with either.
Warriors start out as either peasants or trainees, and don't have much armor yet.
Monk's start out as either a peasant or trainee, and dont have much to start with.

Samurai's start with basic robes, Shinai, and yumi (bow)
Ninja's start with basic clothing, Shinai, and throwing stars
Warrior's start out with padded clothing, and a Tekko
Monk's start out with light clothing and and bo staff

Samurai's start with a basic attack skill for Katana and Yumi
Ninja's start with a basic attack skill for Katana and Throwing Stars
Warrior's start with a basic hand-to-hand combat and a defensive ability
Monk's Start with a basic magic attack and a basic staff attack

Classes can progress in both, or either one of the weapons they have. Specializing in one will yield more focussed abilities for that weapon and will be stronger, but having a diverse selection to choose from may win you the battle.

Hi!
I love the theme you're working with, so if you want any ideas or advice I would be happy to help! :)
I have a lot of knowledge on Eastern Asia, both historical and mythological - so anything you want just ask!

The ninja should be fast, stealthy and critical but be hard to advance in and relatively easy to kill (low hp). In history, ninja were more commonly the equivalent to mercenaries for private families, hit-men or assassins. Once they were discovered they were easily slain by the yojimbo(body guard) of the target family. - Players will naturally choose ninja unless they have a specific preference, because it's a common western "cool" theme.

Samurai should be incredibly skillful, fast, but not as fast as ninja and have a lot of techniques at his disposal, a well-rounded build with those techniques will make them a formidable opponent further on.

The tank class (which can take a lot of damage) could be the Yojimbo (bodyguards) - their main advantage is that they could take a lot of damage, and are fairly powerful too! They will have limited skills and rely on pure strength and defense to see them through. They often wear a lot of armor but also "tactical" gear, such as hidden blades etc..

Monks of the Faith are a good magical class, Jack was right in pointing that out! :) - They would use a lot of "buffs" and healing magics and even in the later advancements summon entities to strike their foes down, using the elements of the world to their advantage, earth, wind , water and fire and so on..

Other classes you could consider -
Ronin - They were small-fry samurai like people, the difference was their morals in life - they could be the "in-between" class of magic and physical attacks.

----------------------------
The game could take place in the Meiji era, a war-torn period.
- Instead of having the ninja and samurai in different factions, keeping them as a way of game-play and individual classes could be cool, instead create a "three kingdoms" (Chinese) style war, with 2 kingdoms if you like!

The two kingdoms could be waring against each other to salvage these power crystals, and to do that they must hire the players. This way, players won't choose to be a ninja or samurai based on how good their faction is, but rather because they like it -

Kingdom 1 and 2 could be Faction 1 and 2 - of course.

---------------------------

Hope I've helped with the brain-storming at all.

Corinthius.

I like it, a lot ! :)
You could implement some kind of paper-doll or image association related feature to add on clothes and armor to the character once you've got more of the concepts under your belt!

Im hoping I can have enough time to do that. Right now the concept may not stick (depends on an e-mail about a model), if I don't get the e-mail I want to hear then I will be using this concept :P

Classes I have decided on having:
Ninja
Samurai
Yojimbo
Monk(of Faith) [Not sure about name, just monk, or Monk of Faith???]
Ronin

Monk(s of Faith) will be able to do summons, like dragons, demons, elemental entities, etc.
Ronins will be able to do the basic magic part of the Monks (without summons), and also have the access to ninja type weapons but with lower power/speed.

**EDIT** Added Picture (Doh! Forgot it first time) And also updated Polygon Count of 3,228 :)

Ok so I got the e-mail that I wanted, but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting.. but here is what I have for a base model, do you think the polygons are too high? I planned on seperating the model to:
Hands
Arms
Head
Chest
Legs
Feet

This way, when armor is applied, I can hide the base mesh and allow the armor to show instead. Cutting on Polygons.

PS. I Will never go too low on polygons, I am an artist and i feel that it is necessary to have nice graphics :)
