Retro browser RPG

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

FYI, started a new forum section for general discussions since so many things are general and do not fit anywhere else.

anyways, Been really looking at the older Eye of the Beholder games and Bard's Tale games once again. Man those games were so much fun and I have been looking into recreating that style and feel for a browser game. No refreshing. Just quick dungeon crawl play. Much like what is shown here but placed in a browser.

I was actually thinking of a Sci-Fi version with far better graphics. There are a couple ways to do this which I am still in Research with. All will be browser based.
1. Make them still images with a click to step much like the old eye of the beholder. You press north and it goes one step north and the background changes. A database would hold the map images, location, and creature locations. Would be light on the DB and could implement multiplayer very easily using Ajax.
2. Using a web client like Unity to make it real time. Creating a slower step motion so it is not a fast paced FPS I am trying to keep it retro. I could still implement multiplayer.
3. My favorite, using javascript for nearly the entire game and finding a way to bring in a 3d map like a quake map or .x and making it much like the old wolfenstien. Slow paced but real time. Having tons of places to explore and multiplayer using ajax. Setting up shops and guilds in towns.

k i am looking at flash or unity for this project. Due to needing to use a 3d map I am thinking Unity.

If you are really wanting the retro gameplay, I would suggest Flash. Unity would be a better choice if you wanted to make it real-time animation while Flash would be better for the traditional "arrow-pad" style and generated scenes.

yeah i was thinking the same thing, started looking back at the javascript idea too, just worried about the strain having to load up image after image for every move.
