My game will need to have a system where people register an email address and password, get a verification email and then clink on the link to activate their account.
Is there a pre-written script anywhere for doing this (like phpbb for forums, or oscommerce for stores)?

Try this: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=php+login+script
Alot of scripts there and tutorials on login script. Or you can watch halls tutorials and it will teach you how to do it.
A login script is also something you often want specific to specifically your game/application/website.

If you want a tutorial on how to create one yourself, you could check out this site, which includes a registration with email confirmation tutorial.
You may want to hurry and copy'n'paste it, though, as an announcement on the front page says that the site is shutting down.
EDIT: I read a bit further into the announcement and it says that the tutorials are staying, but well..you know how that goes. -goes to copy'n'paste it all-
