I'm a bit stuck. I have got quite a few graphical assets going for my game right now but when it comes to actually creating the first terrain inside Unity, I am stumped. I don't know what I want it to look like at all. I had a few ideas in my head but I didn't like them once I created them. I've searched google for 'barren desert' pics but nothing is inspiring, and mainly because a desert is a big open area, while I only want it to be medium sized zones, in which I need to use rocky cliffs to 'guide' the player so they can't just wonder off of the cliff. Anyone want to do a quick paint/photoshop painting to get some ideas flowing?
Until you guys get me some ideas i will be working on a GUI!

Re: Map Making
I have no artistic talents, but have you tried looking at canyon pictures? They are basically just deserts with cliffs. However, they have a lot going for them over regular old deserts.

I liked the desert tile set for the original Neverwinter Nights, perhaps they can inspire you some?
Also, you could put your area in the bottom of a canyon, or up on the edge of one (with steep hills on the other side).
