As I did the same. Cover art looked cool so I picked it up. Have you read the Silver Call duology? It is set 150 years after the first three books. Very good. The dwarves decide to take back the mines. Huge underground battles between dwarves and evil minions.OldRod wrote:I read that years ago - picked up the series in a used bookstore because the cover art looked pretty cool. Its a close to duplicate of Lord Of the Rings. The hobbits are called warrows, evil mage, mines that a human, dwarf, elf, and warrows have to go through thats full of creatures, ect..
Excellent books, loved them from start to finish but man rip off of Tolkien.

Finally got a chance to see this today - in 3D even. WOW! I was blown away. This was a great movie, despite being Dances with Wolves retold. Cameron did an absolutely amazing job bringing Pandora to life. This was well worth seeing in a theater!

Yes, I did. In fact, I think I bought them all at once and actually ended up reading the duology firsthallsofvallhalla wrote:As I did the same. Cover art looked cool so I picked it up. That is how I felt, too. Not the most memorably storyline, but the characters are very memorable, and the world and effects are like nothing else.OldRod wrote:Finally got a chance to see this today - in 3D even. WOW! Finally seen this tonight. Not impressed. Yeah the graphics were wonderful, amazing even , but god the storyline was total trash. I could have dealt with the movie if it was not for the end fight scene. That was officially the corniest, badly directed, most predictable, absolutely absurd fight scene to date. Horrible horrible.
I also believe he overdone Pandora. Its not believable. Too much icing on the cake to make it edible.
With all that said, yes the graphics were stunning. Too bad the story was not

Meh, there is soooo much worse out there in Hollywood. Just saw Daybreakers today....wow.hallsofvallhalla wrote:Finally seen this tonight. Not impressed. Avatar was a special-effect fest action movie. I don't know of any that aren't completely predictable with corny stories lol. I don't personally believe Avatar was badly directed as far as action movies go. I mean, James Cameron has won an Oscar for directing, so he certainly can't be called a bad one.
However, all of that is pretty much irrelevant. People go see these for the special effects, and in that regard, Avatar was up there with the best of them, representing a leap in special effects that has really only been seen before with Star Wars (which was another movie that was technically amazing for the time, but had a derivative, corny, predictable story).

Re: Avatar
in 1978 Star wars was not a corny predictable movie. Today it might be because many movies stemed from that movie
I never said the entire move was badly directed. Nor did I say James Cameron was a bad director. Not sure where you got that from. I said the story was trash and that fight scene was terrible.
I agree Hollywood is throwing out crap, but they are surviving by this oscar and award propaganda. Look at Hurt Locker. Did horrible in theaters until it got nominated for an Oscar. Its a really bad movie also.
on a side note the Oscars are the biggest sham out there
Damon/Affleck won an Oscar for Best ScreenPlay on a movie they didn't write. It was a huge upset that was quickly brushed under the media.
Mira Sorvino won one for Best Supporting Actress for the movie mighty Aphrodite....hahahah
Kramer vs Kramer, Best Picture hahahahaha
and list goes on of dud oscars.
ugh I hate hollywood. Such garbage.
I do not judge ones abilities on whether they get an award. They give awards for all kinds of things and many times things like this are political. Not only that I can name many many movies/directors that have won oscars that do not deserve them.I mean, James Cameron has won an Oscar for directing, so he certainly can't be called a bad one.

Re: Avatar
The story of Star Wars follows the "Hero's Journey" to the letter, and that story type has been around since stories were written. And its not just a few details, as it basically outlines the entire storyhallsofvallhalla wrote:in 1978 Star wars was not a corny predictable movie.
Edit: Star Wars is almost the same as Avatar: visually amazing for their time, lifted story from other sources, yet very creative details and specifics, bad directing in parts, etc. They are very much alike, which is why they keep being compared to each other online and in the media.

no point in arguing with silly comments like that. That is WAYYYYYYY to vague to say anything copied from it

Huh? Uh-oh, did I strike a nerve by insulting Star Wars XD
It is well known that Lucas wrote the story of Star Wars to be a Hero's Journey tale. He has said it several times, and it is the most famous example of a Hero's Journey movie.
EDIT: And you have to keep perspective in mind. People our age saw Star Wars as kids, thus most obsessive fans are around late 20's - 40's now. In 10 or more years the kids of today will be grown up and will probably have the same love for Avatar. The parallels between the two movies are astounding, and have been mentioned many times since Avatar's release.
