Pen and Paper RPG's - Creation Idea

Post by Joey »

There was a previous thread for this, but it was ABOUT how awesome they were and how much we miss them, but there may be a solution :)
Anybody play the old books where you just had a lined piece of paper and a die? xD
I find them more intresting than D&D because they ain't just about Dungeons (and Dragons xD).

I think it is possilble to do that by:

Embedding MySQL into flash (Player Databases for online scores and Stats on the website? )
Dice - Random number from X to X is generated on click (A cool little animation also')
Character Stats (variables which players can determine - 10-15 points at startup)
A Choice of diferent stories (Different ways to go in those stories);
Inventory - Give the user a toggle for 'Auto-add' ( or 'Manual Add' for those who like to do it themselves.)
Save and Load system.
Leaderboards for ' Monsters slain, Routes Took, Weapons Found ect'
No images!

If anybody would be intresting in developing a game like this, let me know and I would help :)

That's what I am wondering. Something like Lone Wolf gamebooks? I loved those things, although they are not really a pen'n'paper RPG. They are just Choose Your Own Adventure books with p'n'p RPG elements added. They were very fun, though, at least when I was young. It was kind of like a single-player tabletop RPG.

Yep, that was the Lone Wolf books. I am sure there were others, but Lone Wolf was by far the most popular ones. They even includes a number matrix grid on the last page so that you could close your eyes and wave a pencil over it, stopping it on a random number to simulate dice rolling if you didn't have any nearby.

I think that it would be an interesting project, and extremely easy to do with PHP if it is not designed to be multiplayer.

i had the Lord of the ring books. Treason in Helm's deep

http://www.amazon.com/Middle-Earth-Ques ... 0425086909

they had dice printed out in the corner of every page and to roll you just flip the pages and randomly stop.

Very fun stuff!

There's a free program which lets you play the Lone Wolf books:

In Australia the most popular series was Fighting Fantasy - I think Lone Wolf might have been more popular in Britain?

PS My game (http://www.ageoffable.net) is meant to be like a gamebook.
Easy to play - hard to survive. http://www.ageoffable.net
