Pen and Paper RPGs

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

You guys miss the fun of them? I personally haven't played a pen and paper rpg in quite some time. I played for 18 years then moved somewhere where no one plays :(

I miss the fun of making new campaigns, exploring dungeons, building a character you feel personalized with, and being a part of what is the closest to a real world as you will ever become.

I have tried to think of the best way to bring this back but to the digital world. Its so hard to recapture the magic. I believe it can be done through a browser game but for the life of me I can't figure out how.

I played all through college (back when AD&D was just D&D  ) but then I moved to a small town where they thought roleplaying games were satanic, so it was hard to find anyone to play :)

There used to be some places to play paper games online, but I've never tried them out.

heeh same here, moved to a small town missouri, had to tech people how to play. Started out with like 2 people interested and by 6 months we had 8 people in the group and more wanting to play.

I still like the idea of making it where players can upload their own adventures for others to play. Could be done as a web browser. THey have a simple menu to build the levels.

hmm that brings me back to a original idea.

Having a game where players manage their characters and go on adventures. The adventures are created by anyone. There is a adventure maker that members can use to make games or campaigns.

Much like NWN but 2d browser and mainly text based.

parents think its satanic  but I played D&D with my uncle and when they found out they got pissed. D&D is fun and I wish I could get it and play with some people.

halls , I have'nt commented much on the pen and paper days but YES I too played AD&D(1st edition) and played it from both ends (DM and Char Player) , there were times when the sessions went on for 3 or more days and times when I spent 3 or 4 days working on campaigns at a time , call it what ya will I played when the big fuss was at its peaks about it being satanic or what not. If AD&D was introduced into the world now it would be just another game in another genre , but back then it was a complex beast (all the numbers and reading) and then to tell them they "became the character so to speak" that really made people think it was weird ! Anyways I would be more then willing to do some work on this idea (but first I really need to catch up to you on UR ;) ) so when you hollar at me let me know what ya need for this :D

This page gives a pretty good introduction on pen'n'paper role-playing games and how they are played. Just ignore the parts where it talks about "miniatures". Ever since the Magic: The Gathering people (Wizards of the Coast) bought Dungeons and Dragons from TSR, they have tried to make it a marketing juggernaut, telling players they have to buy hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of miniatures, props and books to play. All you really need is the player's handbook (preferably prior to version 3) some dice, and the DM (the person who is telling and controlling the story) would probably want to have the DM handbook (again, preferably a TSR product, edition 2). Miniatures and version 3+ are only required for those with no imagination, or "power gamers" who love playing with hundreds of number grinding rules.

Ah... kids these days...

They'll never know the thrill and/or despair of the "saving throw" :)
