So this is happening. A couple days ago some of the core contributors to node.js forked it on Github and created a new version called IO.js. Apparently they are upset with Joyent dragging their feet on a 1.0 version, as well as a few other things.

io.js is designing logos now. This seems to be moving forward. At first it seemed like an interesting event. "Node will finally go to 1.0!", but the more I learned the details the more this sounds like it could be herbicide to the growing roots of node.

I am just hoping they can resolve the issues with Joyent and merge back.

On a somewhat more broad note, a lot of tech journalists are calling this another sign of problems for corporate-backed open source projects. I totally agree. Node would probably better be served being directed by a non-profit organization such as Apache, Meteor, etc. But how you get from a company owning it that has a large financial investment in it to a non-profit, I have no idea.
