Dedicated/Virtual servers?

Anyone have any recommendations for the best for the price? I basically have a feeling if FS gets 1000+ players(wishful thinking) I will need to move it to a virtual server. Actually I am thinking I may want to do this after a few hundred players.

Good question, will need a server too later. WIll be running it on my own 24mbit connection and now that I got my new E8400 CPU, I will put the "old" AMD AThlon X2 3800+ in my server instead...along with a 7800GTX...(overkill for a server? :D )

how much simultaneous connections can a server usually hold per 256 mb ram for a multi 3d game?

(wow that was one ugly sentence :D )

Impossible to answer...altho I would never run a server on 256mb ram :P (Will have 2GB to begin with in my)

All depends on how much of the stuff you place server side. Like most games don't send position updates to the server 60times/second, instead they guess the other players positions and check position just a few times/second. Also as if in my game it saves all stats to a database that will require more power and so on. So there is no such measurement as you ask for ;)

well i guess i should have known that was a stupid question  It's just that, i like to plan before i start making a game, including server requirements, but i guess this can only come at a late stage of the development :D
