Just a general PSA here: Visual Studio 2012 is awesome for Javascript support! And you can get VS 2012 RC (Release Candidate) right now for free as a beta. Intellisense (code completion) is the best I have ever seen in an IDE for JS, and it includes about as many features as you could hope from a JS IDE, such as built-in support for jQuery and more. About the only thing more I could want would be built-in Node support, but we can't have everything I guess. The only IDE that supports Node is Jetbrains Webstorm, and it is an utter mess.

And, if they haven't changed things, you can actually keep VS2012 RC forever, simply forfeiting updates. And updates for the JS support are rather unlikely. The .NET technology updates are really what you would be missing, but if you only want it for JS support, you really aren't missing out on anything. The RC version is as close as their betas come to the retail release. So I highly, highly suggest to grab it now while you can. As soon as retail release comes out, it will be gone.

The only word of warning is that VS2012 is ugly on Windows 7, because it is supposed to mesh with the Windows 8 Metro style. However, it is not the worst-looking IDE I have seen by a long-shot. It is just ugly for a Visual Studio release because, while it is supported by Win7, it is built for win8.

But go grab it! You have nothing to lose, and I don't think you will be disappointed.

Instructions for the site: Click the purple "Visual Studio" button, then click "Ultimate", then select "Visual Studio Ultimate 2012 RC - English Web Installer". It will download a small file. Open that file, and then that will direct the rest of the download and installation. It is big, but you will eventually get some options to strip out some of the other support to shrink the installed size down. Just be sure to leave in the Web support!

Can't get 2012 to install on my work laptop, hardware issues I'm guessing. A few colleagues have it and I do have to admit it really does have good tools for JavaScript development. Major improvement from 2010, don't forget the F12 button! F12 works in JavaScript!

I have to admit the Wed Install tool is not that useful when things don't go well. When I was using VS2010, I had to get the MVC 4 toolkit addon, and it didn't work. No reason, no solution, or anything. So I know your pain completely!

And very cool about F12! I had tried that in JS in an earlier version of VS and it didn't work and never tried it since. Thanks!

On a side-note, if that ugly "Metro" style is what is going to be in Windows 8, I think it might just be time for me to move on to Linux? Maybe I'm just old school?

I don't find Win8 Metro ugly, but running an application designed for Win8 Metro in Win7 lacks a bit. It may also be that some touching-up is needed before the retail release, but this is the first Win8 program I have installed on a Win7 machine. I think on Win8 it will look great. Like back in the day Win XP applications looked terrible on Win 98, but looked great on Win XP, since that is what they were designed for.
