Inspiration for Halls

So back in the days when I was working on Forsaken Sanctum with the Torque MMOkit I listened to this song all the time while world building. It always brings me back to that world. To that time that was so much growth and learning and plain ole fun. I had over 100 players(technically 200 but whatever), a active team of 10 members and one of the premier upcoming 3d Sci Fi mmos. I was interviewed by several indie game magazines and had over 60,000 yes 60k posts in the Linux forums about the game. It was a time I will never forget and was what brought me to building Indie-resource. I wanted others to experience that feeling no matter how short term it may be.

Today I read the lyrics and wow how they point to so much of my interest in going back to the kit and redeveloping FS. How we all have that one game that defines us much like many musicians always have that one song that defines their career.

I was reading the lyrics for the first time and it is amazing where one can find inspiration in the world around them,
That world is calling
So I'm crawling back to sea
Against the surge of waves that
Held us in that ancient grip beneath
Retreat to safer waters
The world of Forsaken Sanctum has always been calling to me...No matter how much other development I do, that world calls me... against all that I fight to tell myself a simple shooter is easier or puzzle game...the world of the of a living breathing world calls me back.
Still learning what chaos kills
But whoever cares, nobody cares like you do
Why we'd abandon time, just shut the door
Why we'd go to the wall, claim less is more
Chaos has been the father of destruction in so many of my games. No one cares about that world and the times I spent on it like I do. I have abandoned so much of my time in honor of that world yet I shut the door on it to only claim a game with less is so much more when in all truth it might not be.
Well I won't pretend to lie
Once more protect my blinded sight
You'd say
For I came from a fish you mock the place where I exist and live.
I could build it and get mocked about graphics, game play whatever but the truth of it is I am a game developer living in a sea of accomplished games. I will never meet the expectations of everyone. So be a fish and swim in the sea of your choosing. Stop thinking the next course of learning and development will be or what you need to complete your next game. Sometimes we have to swim upstream or against the current to accomplish a seemingly impossible goal.

So I hope this helps to inspire others as it has for me. Funny how a song I have been listening to for years comes across with a meaning now when I realize what I have been wanting to build for years.

It is funny that way. Most likely the song was written for your situation right now that you are experiencing. Welcome back to the game Halls, you have done the same in me. If you check out the Blogs. :D

Well, I agree about not chasing after the blessings of every single person who's decided they can and will form an opinion.

But I think a bane of game making is the supposed 'endless' game. Clearly you will never finish an endless game. It's a bane because it's really the goal of not actually finishing a game, ever.

I'm inclined to think even a living, breathing game is best to have a point where, like a child, it can go out and live and breath on it's own, without it's parent anymore. Ie, setting a 'leaving home' point. Just my thoughts.

I was just reading something like that in a Flash game development book the other day! They said too many developers get into developing "endless games", and you need to write out what features you want, and stick with it so you can move on. It is one thing to keep working on a game that is still missing base functionality and features, but at some point it needs to be done so you can move on with your life hehe :)

And cool stuff, Halls! I have my songs of inspiration as well, but not likely the kinds everyone would get in to or feel the same way as me (I am mostly into 90's hip-hop lol). 8-)

Jack's Inspiration song:

woke up quick, at about noon
jus' thought that i had to be in compton soon
i gotta get drunk before the day begins
before my mother starts bitchin about ma friends
about to go and damn near went blind
young niggaz at the path throwin up gang signs
ran in the house, and grabbed ma clip
wit the mack 10 on the side of ma hip
bailed outside and pointed ma weapon
just as i thought the fools kept steppin
jumped in the fo' hit the juice on ma ride
i got front back, and side to side
then i let the alpine play (play)
pumpin new *&^& by NWA
it was gangsta gangsta at the top of the list
then i played my own shit and it went somethin' like this
cruisin down the street in my six-fo''
jockin the bitches, slappin the hoes
went to the park to get the scoop
knuckleheads out there cold, shootin some hoops
a car pulls up, who can it be
a fresh El Camino rollin kilo G
he rolled down his window and he started to say
its all about makin that G.T.A.
(CHORUS)
coz the boys in the hood are always hard
you come talkin that trash, we'll pull ya card
knowin' nutin in life but to be legit'
dont quote me boy coz i aint said &^*&
(SCRATCHES) yo man
"Get the *^&* out"
(SCRATCHES) pump that beat
"mutha*%&*, say what"
Down on B's is the place to give me the pace
he said ma man J.D. is on freebase
the boy J.D. was a friend of mine
'till i caught him in my car tryin to steal the Alpine
chased him down the street to call a truce
the silly mutha&^*% pulls out a deuce deuce
little did he know i had a loaded 12 guage
one sucker dead, L.A. Times front page
(CHORUS)
coz the boys in the hood are always hard
you come talkin that trash, well pull ya card
knowin' nutin in life but to be legit'
dont quote me boy coz i aint said &^%$
(SCRATCHES) "yo LeRoy"
(SCRATCHES) "beer drinkin breath stinkin sniffin glue"
bored as hell and i wanna get ill
so i went to a spot where ma homeboys chill
the fellas out there makin dat dollar
i pulled up in ma 6 fo' impala
they greet me wit a 40 and i start drinkin
and from the 8 ball, my breath starts stinkin
left to get ma girl to rock that body
before i left, i hit the bac-ardi
went to her house to get her out of the pad
dumb hoe said somethin that made me mad
she said somethin that i couldnt believe
so i grabbed the stupid bitch by her nappy-ass weave
she started talkin *&^%, wouldnt you know
reached back like a pimp, slapped the hoe
her father jumped up and he started to shout
so i threw a right cross and knocked his old-&^% out
(CHORUS)
coz the boys in the hood are always hard
you come talkin that trash, well pull ya card
knowin' nutin in life but to be legit'
dont quote me boy coz i aint said *&^%
