What the hedgehog...?!

Has anyone else seen the video for
"Sonic the Hedgehog Fan Remix" or played the demo? This is freaking unbelievable! This is an indie project that was turning the original STH into a stunning, AAA-quality 2D-in-3D game. In fact, it puts Sonic 4 (recently released by Sega on PSN and XBLA) to shame.
Here is the website to the project, and supposedly they have a playable demo floating around out there of the first zone. When I tried downloading it from the site it didn't seem to work (removed from MediaFire for "violations"), but others seem to be finding it no problem.
I just hope it can see the light of day if the extremely talented developers can stick with it. I just posted a day or two ago about "Chrono Resurrection", the 3D remake of Chrono Trigger that got a cease and desist order from Square Enix. I hope we aren't just left with pretty videos of this one, too.

I'm betting ... canned. In another example of how copyright law basically stiffles creativity rather than protects it (copyright law basically protects companies making a profit - that's not the same as protecting creativity)

Apparently this game was built using Unity! SWEET!
Here is the link for the game:

Yeah, I should have come back to mention that my wife found it a few minutes after I posted that. I have not had a chance to really check it out, though. But I did see it was made with Unity
@Callen:
I guess I just wish some of these fan game teams would devote their skill and time to original IPs. There are/were a lot of talented artists working on that Sonic game as well as some very talented developers. But the thing is...I know what to expect in it, because I already played it, just with different graphics. There are so many artists out there sketching original characters all day, and so many writers creating completely original stories all day, every day. There is no drought to the creativity of those in the indie game development community and beyond. What I think I am saying (it is late and I am running on little sleep) is that I actually go the other way a bit from your stance, in that fan games of this caliber kind of frustrate me. Teams like this could make indie, little-to-no budget games that could garner respect for what we do and possibly even open up opportunities for us all with just a bit of creativity and a charming, unique IP.

I almost wondered if it was made with unity? What a great showcase for the engine! Can't buy that publicity
Jack, yeah, but you can tell they are in love with sonic. I mean luuuuuuurv! How else did they put that much elbow grease in?
I mean, that's what drives creation of actual physical games (not just the ideas but actual completed code) - passion!
That said, switch the recognisable characters around a bit (ie, sonic and eggman) and your good to dodge the C&D. But I totally understand how to begin with, they had to make it sonic. That's where their passion lay!
Heh, what would be cool is if they made an in game character maker for the main character, so players could make their own dude...and make him look like sonic if they want to, by shifting the sliders and such.

This would not have gotten so much notice if it wasn't Sonic. Would this topic exist if you just came across a sonic clone? or even a original game? Prob not. Whilst they may get shut down don't think the creators won't get a job opportunity over it

Like I always say, if they get popular they will get it. While I believe Sega is dramatically mismanaging it, they are certainly keeping control on their IPs.
Case in point:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... fan-remake
Summary: After 8 years of working on this project and a prior approval by Sega the approval was rejected and the project was shut down.

While I have been a long-time supporter of IP-owner rights, I have to say that that is extremely crappy to give permission and then rescind it later. They may be indie projects with no payroll, but this is still large chunks of people's lives and tons of blood, sweat and tears that will go for not when the project was started with the IP-owners blessings.
That said, I actually saw that Streets of Rage fan remake, and don't understand why it existed. It used the same music, graphics and a perfect emulation of the physics. So....what was the point, when it is on every Sega classics pack and available on emulators? Of course whether it should have existed or not is aside from the point of Sega rescinding permissions, which is crappy regardless.
