Hola people of Indie-Resource!
Quick question, assuming that all of you have played pokemon before, with that knowledge, What types of coding do you think will be used the most? And what engine would you recommend making it on?

Does it not depend on what you want? Pokemon in it`s core has always been a 2d RPG style game. It was a "free roam" world, consists of several types of actions, this be the walking, event handling and battle situations. Battle consists of 6 accesable pokemons. All pokemons had a base type, a predefined list of actions they can or cannot take. Most actions have some sort of animation bound to it. The rest is up to you i guess. I wouldn`t try and start creating something different, making a 3d world for pokemon. It would be a pain to create such a world, besides, most players of pokemon are used to the 2d game enviremonment, so best to stick with that.
If you are looking for a good engine, i can`t help you with that. Most others here will give you some feedback on what to you, but, in the end, it`s all up to you

Thanks halls! I've got a few questions for all of you now...
1. Should I incorporate shadow pokemon, who can be purified?
2. Should I have the same odds of finding a shiny pokemon as in the normal games?
3. In game, when battling gym leaders/elite four, do you think that for each region, they should have to fight its own gym leaders and elite four, or should you go to every region's gym leaders, and then face one giant elite four (perhaps more than four if this is the case?)(I am combining all regions into one world, FYI)
4. Should keep the max pokemon level at 100, or should we perhaps increase it?
5. Do you believe that there is any chance that we will be called out for a copyright infringement? (I personally don't, seeing as there are hundreds of pokemon games out there already that aren't being punished at all)
6. Should I add a live chat feature? (might be a pain in the ass, but whatever, hahaha)
7. Lastly, generally speaking, should I make the game as similar to the actual pokemon games as possible, or as different as possible? (I'm talking about the general flow of the game, looks, etc. I am NOT referring to events and storyline because I don't intend on making that the same anyway)
All in all, this game is coming along beautifully (knock on wood). To save myself an ungodly amount of time, i went online and found a starter kit that already has the pokemon sprites and a battle system that I can impliment into our game (I am using RPG Maker XP to make it, it works fantastic!)
I am looking forward to hear what you all have to say, your opinions are much appreciated!

1-4 I know very little about pokemon
5. slightly doubt it and if you do then you use the shell of the game to create your own.
6. yes definitely
7. If you are appealing to poke fans then yes.

1 - yes have shadow pokes. imo have them stronger, but maybe less obedient. give the option to purify them. if a player purifies them they become slightly weaker but follow orders.
2 - yes keep chances as normal.
3 - if its a MMO, personally i would have 1 region with gym leaders and elite four. then the other regions have them controlled by players. build your own group / team to become the gym leaders. would make the game different and challenging. then have some kinda face off to challenge teams for the gym(s).
if its not a MMO. different regions and elite fours.
4 - keep max level @ 100 to start with, maybe increase later.
5 - I think your main risk would be when making money on it. if they dont care about that, then you should be free to go.
6 - yes
7 - yes
