Talking with NPC's

I was thinking of what to add to give more dimension to play, which might otherwise be repeating the same thing (hey, don't blame me, urban dead has you flailing at a zombie for 20-30 clicks at a time. I was thinking some sort of flow charted conversation every so often with an NPC might be good? One thing about conversations in most RPG's is that they stop the reward structure of the game dead, so I'd avoid that - each thing you say to an NPC would get you a reward, and certain conversation responces might get higher reward. That's not a reward that comes from the NPC or makes sense in some simulation way, it just springs out of thin air to make conversation as rewarding as combat.

Why not give "social" points and as a reward if players have enough social points, you can buy some unique features? Would beat the regular potions or resources if you ask me, it adds an extra dimension to conversation. Especially if you add some questions in based on previous dialogue, if they awnser right, they get extra points etc.

It depends on whether social points could be used like money or whatever resource you often get from combat - and if it can, then seperating it is mostly a depiction thing. If it can't be used like money, then it's sort of making a seperate mini game, which seperates NPC chatting away from combat.
