Holy crap! He should try to team up with Nintendo and try to bring this to market, particularly considering the direction Nintendo is heading with the 3DS (this could be like the big-brother console version of the 3DS). That wasn't a "3D" TV, but the effect looked far more 3D than any 3D TV out there, even on camera! What a cool idea!
Thanks for sharing!

Wait a sec...I wonder if this is how the Nintendo 3DS is going to work. First, it said the 3DS will not use any 3D glasses. Check. Second, some news articles reported a slight "outward" 3D effect, but more of a "looking into a window" effect". Check. While having a camera follow the head a non-infrared viewer in a room could be difficult, from the distance players play portable consoles, it may not be that hard. You would only have to be following the one large, moving thing in your view. The 3DS could easily have a small camera on it capable of following your head if it is only 6 inches to a foot away.

has anyone tried this??? I am beginning to wonder about the 3d effect we seen. Why would one see it and not someone standing next to them. Even standing still you could see the 3d.

Because I believe the 3D effect is an optical illusion. Your brain is programmed to view things in 3D, and that is tied very closely to your inner-ear and head movement. When your brain sees the perspective of something changing along with the movement of your inner-ear, it accepts that it is seeing a 3D object. Someone next to you may see
some of the 3D effect (as you can see when the guy in the video is playing it with the other controller) but it will not be the same as when your head is being tracked.
I think the reason it seemed 3D even when standing still was due to the scene in the game itself. It was a very straight-forward, clean 3D perspective with nothing but vectors. It would likely not be quite so pronounced in other games.
I believe it is all on the up-and-up, but that is just my take on it. He also seemed quite open with the technology, and was not only inviting people to try it out, he was challenging people to make games for the setup. My only problems with trying it out is: A. My console is not set up to play home brew games, and can't it get bricked trying to set it up to do so? and B. I don't want to take apart my detector strip, and am a bit wary of trying out the baseball cap method (I don't want it to fall off and break).

I set my console up quite a while ago for homebrew...have a external hardrive with over 200 gigs of stuff for the WII. Very simple to do. 4.2 is the easiest.
I understand the optical illusion side but would our brain register through a video camera then watching it on you tube?? Just weird to me.

Ohh yeah LOL I have been kind of tired today. Hmmm..that is kind of odd, though. But it seems like it would be very hard to do as an edited special effect, and I am still going to chalk up the effect on the video as being due to the simple 3D geometry of the game scene.
