The whole point of this is that I really miss playing shadowrun. So I thought about making a browser based version of it. I'm not looking for thousands of players just something that me and my friends can mess around with.

So I've been brainstorming on how to do it and I'm drawing some blanks that I was hoping I could get some feedback on. I understand the over all concept, there are some finer points I'm fuzzy on. At first glance combat may seem difficult as there are 3 different type of combat within the game. There is your standard combat, there is matrix combat and there is astral combat. I figure if I take them one at a time I can do it. The great thing about it is that the rule book has all the formulas already done, I just need to translate them into PHP The 2 parts that I'm fuzzy on are how to do the missions and how to do the matrix. I kinda have an idea in my head about the matrix, its really the missions that concerns me. I thought about doing them the way World of Warcraft does them. One mission type could be to kill x number of y mob, other could be to find x number of y item. I am totally open to suggestions though.

The best part about it, is that I already own all the books. So all I would need to do is translate the print into HTML/PHP/MYSQL. So what do you think? Do you think you could help me fill in the gaps?

did you happen to see my message system in Quests of Crocania? It may help give a idea on that.

What I am wanting to do with GURPS is somewhat liek what you are wanting to do and it has been discussed here before. We create a place where players can build and play quests. Just like the pen and paper but single player questing. GM's can go through and build quests that any player could play.

Just be careful about actually calling it a Shadowrun game without legal permission. Halls is going about a potential GURPS game the right way by trying to get permission. However, it seems like Shadowrun is still kicking and licensing at least its name out (i.e. the XBox and PS3 games), so that may be more difficult. Even if it is a small game for a few friends, if they have any web-crawling goons at the company who keep an eye out for stuff like that, they could possibly shut your game down for IP infringement.

Or, you could possibly just use ideas from Shadowrun and call it something else. As long as you aren't using proper names, you would likely be ok, since a player won't really be able to tell what algorithms the server is using just by playing.

Pardon my french but I would laugh my balls off if they slapped me with IP infringement. ROLF! I could see if I was trying to do it on a massive scale and have hundreds of players and get donations and such. But for a game that may have 2 or 3 players, sheesh it would cost them more just to have there lawyers send me a letter than it would to just do nothing.


Though I do appreciate you looking out for me Jack . I guess it just comes down to the fact that corporate america is just plain greedy....
