Scape,

First off, let me have my little hissy fit.

WHY ARE ALL GAME CREATION FORUMS PLAGUED WITH THIS!!!!!

note: comments follow php system
Hi Everyone!

I am creating a game, but I haven't made up a name yet, so its going to be called project X! //As soon as you read this, you know whats next

// Pick 1 of the following options
// Option 1
I have no experience at all in programming, so I will need some scripters to write the game. // Often results in the "It takes years to make a mmorpg" talk

//Option 2
I have no experience in programming, but have read the tutorials at *link*, but will still need some help. //ditto above

//Option 3
//Deliberately ignores this in hope of getting people into the team before revealing this

//Pick one of the following:
//Option 1
Credit will be given to everyone who participates!

//Option 2
*Insert some revolutionary system to calculate % profits of % recognition*

//Option 3
I am planning to make money off this, but anyone who helps will get some money as well. //Often results in the "It is really hard to make money" speech, or the "you will fail miserably" speech

I will need: // Note the "I". Does that make people feel like joining? - listing people off like groceries.
-coders/scripters/programmers //using coders denotes being from RPG Maker/other visual-based language background, incorrect usage of scripter/programmer denotes lack of knowledge
-artists //but no concept artists? - could be argued.

//finishes off with a "you will get" message, in one last effort to convince people to join.

Aside from that, you should tell us more about the game:
Is it a browser based rpg?
Or a browser based strategy game?
When is it set?
What is it about?
Aim of the game?

Pax.

hehe good quote. I believe it stems from everyone wanting a game now. Very few people want to spend the time first to learn the stuff first then find a team.

I found out having a team = NULL. I would rather work by myself or with maybe 1 other person. unpaid indies teams very seldom work. Everyone always wants to do their own thing or be the head dog.

Very true. 99.99% of internet teams fail. You just can't keep people motivated to work on your idea through the hard, torturous periods of development. How do you keep someone dropping large amounts of time from their life, possible for a year or more? You pretty much have to pay them, and pay them well to do that.

Every once in a while a team will actually stick together and get something accomplished, but that is definitely the exception and not the rule. Like Halls, I have lost all faith in assembling large teams (or even more than just 1 other person) to do a project. If I want to code a game, I just try to learn how to do it myself.

Actually, I would put it at:

98 % fail within a month,
99.5% fail within 3 months,
99.70% fail within 6 months,

And about 30% of the 99.70% that survive 6 months actually make it.

I find that for the best chances finishing the game, you NEED a design document. It keeps everyone on track and "it isn't in the design document" is easier to say than "Ok, we'll try, but we probably won't be able to include it" and offers less friction.

The team needs to work together. If any member gets angry, they can just steal your source, and then take on another identity! You will never be able to get it back, or get the team member back.

Having the game just near alpha testing also helps as it gives members something to work on. If the game is using a custom game-engine, getting the engine to work is normally enough. It just gives a sense of achievement to the team and glues the team together.

Also, scripters/programmers have a tendency to equate productivity to lines of code written, so if they don't get a few thousand lines per week (an example(I get about 300-400 lines per hour (aside from game design and the dreaded economy balancing))), they may be tempted to ditch the team for something which is progressing faster.

Finally, we people have a tendency to get bored with an idea, and then start another project. (Halls is a perfect example) So there really needs to be something achieved or the team will fall apart.

Pax.

P.S. I have had a few (ok, 1 or 2) successful teams these few years, and when they work together, it is amazing what you can do.

The secret: you need to get them to dream the exact same dream as everyone else. And good communication, that always helps.

Great Post. Actually our team is composed by 2 creators/developers and one 3D graphic.

We are working together since three months and we are still proceeding.
It's very difficult though, to get testers and feedback from them...
