I rented 9 over the weekend and I liked it. It was better then I expected, though I did learn that this movie was based on an animated short and was never meant to be a film. With that in mind prior to watching it, it was good. On a scale of 1-10, I give this movie a 6. Simply because the graphics were done nicely, the creepy factor was good (as long as you put yourself in their shoes), sfx & vfx were good and being based on an animated short, they turned it around very nicely. I would definitly watch this movie again in the future and would recommend anyone who likes animated films, to give this one a chance (but you have to keep in mind it was based off a short film).

Storyline (from IMDB - WARNING may cause spoil alerts!):

After an apocalyptic war between human and machines, the world is completely destroyed and without human life. The burlap doll 9 awakes without voice and finds a weird object in the middle of the debris that he brings with him. While walking through the ruins, 9 is attacked by a machine called Beast but he is saved by another doll called 2 that fixes his voice. 2 brings 9 to meet his hidden community, leaded by the coward 1. When 2 is captured by a machine, the newcomer 9 convinces the other dolls to go with him to rescue 2. However, 9 places the device that he found in a slot and activates a lethal machine called Brain. The burlap dolls are chased by Brain and despite the advices of 1 that they should hide, 9 organizes an attack to destroy Brain. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

When 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. I gave it a 2. No real plot. Characters were not thought out well at all. Improper use of emotions often. Action was dry. No sense of accomplishment at end of movie.

Again, it originally an animated short story, never meant to be a full feature length film. Have to get that locked in the mind before watching the film to appreciate it...imo

I watched the short film that came with the disc...it sucked! No voices, animations/timings were off, graphics were low...etc...

Yeah, I can understand that, too, although I was not very thrilled with 9. My fiancee and I watched about 45 minutes before turning it off. The characters were just too thin for me. Why was 9 going to risk his brand new life for a puppet-thingy he just met and had a 3 minutes conversation with? His good and proper hero attitude just seems kind of foolish and unreasonable.

I didn't know it was based on a short, though, and may try to check that out

The movie actually answers the whole emotion thing.

Personally, i thought it was a great film.

I have to say I haven't seen a Tim Burton film that I didn't love, and 9 is no exception. I went to the theater to see it and thought the movie was awesome! It kinda reminded me of another movie I'd seen that was made in 1977 called Wizards. No not the 90 minute Nintendo commerical one with fred savage that was made in 1989, this was an animated one. Look it up, its by Ralph Bakshi.

OMG i love the movie Wizards!

9 wasn't actually a Tim Burton film. He was simply "Executive Producer", which is Hollywood lingo for "He didn't do anything on the movie at all, but we wanted his name attached to it". It was directed by Shane Acker (he also wrote the original story) and the screenplay was by Pamela Pettler. Hollywood has been doing this a lot recently. Quinton Tarantino's name has been used several times in this way as well, as has Steven Spielberg.
