Game idea, 2d could make it happen?

Ever since I started doing 3D I wanted to make a MMO, well thats actually why i started 3D. But I've always wanted one that took a massive colaberation or one pretty good player.

The idea that I had was that the map started with 3 towns (maybe a few more), a generic forest area, a desert, and a wintery area, and those basic cities had what you needed to start fighting, creating and scavenging. Once you got a few levels under your belt and some experience and knowledge you could go out, find an area that has not been taken and (it would have a predefined size) take it yourself. You could start building, brick by brick, building by building. Once you got big enough you could expand the area you have to continue building and growing. If your area had people all around you, then you could proposition them to buy their land. People could come and live in your land or set a home point there. You get a very small percentage of your cities worth and you recieve the money, to expand your city and get more money/items/etc, or to play the game however you want it.

I've pretty much given up on that idea because I know that is pretty rediculous but it would be so awesome (for me). I kinda got the idea back in my head though from seeing Halls' videos on player built and owned buildings.

Do you guys think that it would be possible now? If so, possible with what engine in your opinion?

Its very possible but might be very hard to make without some heavy programming experience. I do not know of a current engine capable of this without some serious modding but who knows.

It's kool that it is 2 votes for what I wanted to hear (no, neither are mine lol). I'm also glad to hear that it is capable, wasn't sure if Unity would support something like this, any ideas if it would be able to? Not sure if source is included with free unity or any unity for that matter..

Last I heard, the source code license for Unity is $50,000+ and is a read-only license.

I think it is a GREAT idea. You see, the thing about most MMO's now is that they don't allow people to own player houses and customize them. There are a few, but even then, it just dosen't feel right (to me). Something like this has potential if you render 8 different animations for walking (N,NE,E,SE,S,SW,W,NW) A lot of browser games are not actually 3D, but rendered images, I would try that if I were you :)

Good luck... If you start it, make sure you finish it :D

or they just use the free version. You dont need the source for unity to make a great game. With unity if you torrent the source
1. good luck on finding it
2. good luck on wasting your time. You will never be able to release it. There are so few companies that have bought the source they WILL ask you for your license.

I am almost thinking of starting a new project. Even if it can't do this (right away) but I still get it to where I want it to be I will be happy. If I get a design doc out of my ieas and stuff like that I might start with some recruiting of Unity programmers..
