Dev Diary #2

(Halls I thought you said you were starting up a dev diary section :P)

I have been messing around with some of goole maps scans of my city. I have a basic layout of the streets ready but I feel there are too many streets right now, as I will be working solo I figured I would cut my city in half then maybe even remove more streets that are random. Been thinking of some items that you can find. In my house I have found some basic invention materials and scrap that can be used to make awesome weapons.
Item list:

- Remote Controlled Car
- Table Saw
- Drill
- Chain
- Wood Planks
- Alcohol (for burning probably)
- Fishing Line
- Copper Wire
- Large Copper Tubing
- Small Copper Tubing
- Laser Sensor (from Laser Printer)
- Salt Peter

Items I have thought up that you will be able to get at a local store (which is Wal-Mart but I can't call it that):

- Mini Propane Tanks (almost look like handheld propane grenades!!)
- Bow/Arrow
- BB Gun
- Cross Bow
- Quick Reload for bow/crossbow (holds alot of rounds)
- Hunting Knives
- Slingshot
- Flashlight
- Generator

I will think of some more tomorow then tomorow/weekend create some concept drawings/schematics of what they create.

*EDIT* I did some research of my own on how many canadians own legal firearms. The UN reported that over 7 million people in Canada own a firearm in 1991 (26% of people) so that means roughly in my game every 1/4 house should contain a firearm or atleast some ammo. They also had stats on how many people owned illegal weapons (non registered) and that was 10% in 1991. So I can assume that 1 in 4 houses have some regular ammo/weapon then 1 in 10 houses could contain an exotic weapon/ammo.

Haven't got started on any drawings just yet (been doing homework) but I've been thinking a bit and decided that because of the invasion the government has decided to fix the problem at the source, they started to bomb specific locations where they thought would be the best areas to get the most zombies. This is save me time and valuable polys. There will still be an abundance of houses to search through though.

I also want the zombies to be out during night, or inside of buildings during the day (I am Legend style). This gives you a chance to go scavenging during the day without always being attacked by a zombie or two. You will also be able to workout every third day (workout, no, no, workout) unless you find different things in local shops which will allow you to workout every day. You can find different equipment to help raise the skill faster.

The skills for working out go:
Strength : More equipment you can carry. Basic equipment for workout gains 0.1 every 3 days. Supplements gains 0.1 each day you workout. New equipment will gain more if you have alternate equlevelent equipment. (Bench press v.2, dumbell v.2, barbell v.2) having that comination will earn you 0.3 points per gain because you have took the time to get all 3 ov the v.2. If you have two v.2 then you will only gain 0.2 as well as one v.2.

Speed : Run faster, reload faster. Basic workout equipment will gain 0.1 then each new version you get earns an extra 0.1 (treadmill).

Stamina : How long you can run, less gun movement when aiming. Basic workout equipment (treadmill) for long periods of time at a stable pace. Each new treadmill upgrade will get you 0.1 additional points.

Storyline-ish / Gameplay
Not everyone has been turned into zombies, so as you wander you may find yourself running into gangs that will attack you. No gang accpets new members do to the untrustworthy wastelands. These gangs are often equipped with guns and carry ammo for your hard work of killing them.

Experience Gains: Gaining experience isn't easy, it is a tedious task living in terror of the wasteland. You can gain expereince by discovering new important locations, finding new inventions, creating inventions, doing quests, and killing enemies.

Levelling Up : Levelling up will earn you new things such as naturally stronger strength, speed, and stamina, and picking perks. Perks will include a variety of things from finding more ammo/food/health, to being stronger, to being able to sneak around town.

More to come :)

*Edit* Sorry forgot to include the poly count, the total polys for all of the items below (33 objects or so) is 7442 polys. Dunno if that's too high but it seems reasonable.

I have some media for the game. I will have one picture posted at the end, it is all un-textured, low-poly, regular city items. Things like chainlink fences are going to be alpha maps (I hope DBPro supports that) to maintain as low poly as I can, textures I will hopefully be spending enough time on to make them look realistic enough to have people say "Oh wow! Nice detail on some of the smaller items!" instead of the regular graphics that I find in alot of indie games (no offense, I just focus on graphics because it's what I do). The items include:

- 4 Different power lines
- 2 slightly different trash bins
- 4 different signs (yeild, stop, etc.)
- A single type of fence (wooden, not chainlink)
- 2 slightly different mail boxes
- Street Lamp
- 2 slightly different bus stops
- Concrete barriers
- Concrete bump/curb for parking lots
- Bus stop sign
- Wooden shipment things (i truely forget the name, it's late, I'm tired :P
- Fire Hydrant
- Police wooden barricades
- Parking lot street lamps
- Simple Shop
- Wooden Benches
- Trash can

Will work on texturing sometime soon hopefully. Been a busy week and a tiring one.

If you have any suggestions, let me know :)

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates. I have been arguing with myself on what engine to be using for this project. I don't know if I should go with DarkBasicPro or if I should be using Unity Indie for this. I've never used Unity but their interface seems quite simple compaired to DBPro's because you have to code what objects go where and I'm not all that strong with coding :(

Let me know what engine you think I should use (in case of a tie winner goes to Unity since I am leaning towards Unity anyways).

As far as models go, I haven't done any work with UV's or textures. I'm finding it really difficult to have any time to work on it. I have maybe 3 hours on the computer, generally I have closer to 1.5 - 2 hours. That's isn't too much time, UVMapping takes really long for me since I try to plan it out almost perfectly to make things logical and easier later.
