why would you need a dedicated server? this person is confused. they thought you meant a 3d mmorpg like Realm Crafter game. All you need is a godaddy host for $6 a month.....

basically I have 3 games running on one account. I also have my games guild studios account, forsaken sanctum, and indie-resource on the same account. Its sweet. As long as you don't go over your bandwidth your fine. I have even asked them about i. They don't care what you have running on it as long as you pay your monthly dues ;)...

http://www.godaddy.com/Hosting/Legacy.aspx?ci=15571

I have the deluxe plan. Linux $7 a month
150 GBSpace | 1,500 GB Transfer
500 Email Accounts
25 MySQL Databases

* 24x7 FTP access
* World-Class Data Centers
* Daily Backups
* Best-of-Breed Routers, Firewalls and Servers
* Web site statistics
* FREE Email Addresses
* Google® Webmaster Tools
* Ad Credits from MySpace®, Google® and Facebook®
* Key Technical Features

or for $15.00 a month

Unlimited Space and Transfer!
1000 Email Accounts
Unlimited MySQL Databases

you do not need a dedicated server, when you get to that point you will be making lots o money from the 1,000's of players you have built up.

Matt B.: I would need to know this in order to get you the correct figure
kris: updating feilds within a few database tables. i am working on a browser based game.
Matt B.: Is this a 3D game or a text based game?
kris: text based. so will be replenishing health, increasing funds and such like. so will be some math functions running.
Matt B.: Okay, how many players will there be?
kris: to start with probably on a few. but could end up being thousands.
Matt B.: Okay for that you would at least need a VPS.
kris: ok. i was looking at that. but due to funding, at the moment i am tryon to look at cheaper options, untill one is needed Matt B.: Well the Power and Pro packaged are on shared hosting so they have a 10-20 concurrent connections limitation.
kris: i see.
kris: ok. i will look into the VPS hosting abit more then.
Matt B.: Okay.
Matt B.: Let me give you my contact information so that if you have any other questions or when you are ready to get started, you can contact me directly.

kris: VPS and shared webhosting DB access Welcome kris! Please hold while we locate a representative. Currently 2 chat request session(s) before you.
You are now speaking with Jeremiel of Sales.
Jeremiel: Hello Kris! How may I help you today?
kris: Hi. i am currently building an online browser based game, and am looking at renting a VPS to host it on, due to the possable demands it will need
kris: i am also creating a seperate site which will manage all the accounts for the said game, and any future ones
kris: what i need to know is if i was to rent both from inmotion, is it possable for one website to read and write database information from the other website?
Jeremiel: Yes, because you can configure your servers to communicate through an IP address associated with the web hosting account.
Jeremiel: What technology are the games going to be written in: Flash, PHP?
kris: php
kris: and a very small amount of ajax
Jeremiel: Sounds good. Our servers can support those types of technologies.
kris: ok and one last question. with the VPS what restrictions will i have regarding cron jobs?
kris: is there a certain CPU usage i have to abide by?
Jeremiel: The actual restriction for the VPS would be the amount of RAM you invest on the server.
kris: ok. thanks alot Jeremiel. you have helped alot :)
Jeremiel: It's my pleasure assisting you, Kris. Were you ready to get started today?
kris: unfortunatly not. still quite alot of work needs doing. and it doesnt seem to end
Jeremiel: Sounds good. To be more efficient, when you are ready to get started or when you have more questions, just give me a call. I can be reached at:USA Toll-Free # 888-321-4678, option 9, Ext. 854International # 213-258-4422, option 9, Ext. 854M-F 8am-Midnight, Sat and Sun 10am to 9pm EST.
kris: do you have an email address instead? as i am a UK resident. and calling the US will cost me quite abit
Jeremiel: Yes, I can be reach at jeremield@inmotionhosting.com.
Jeremiel: Also, if you cannot call me, then I can call you.
kris: ok. thanks alot. i will contact you asoon as i am ready for hosting, or another question comes to mind :)
kris: have a good day. and thanks once again
Jeremiel: It's my pleasure assisting you, Kris. I appreciate your time and your potential business.

my main problem with godaddy is the fact you are restricted to cpu usage and 15 min crons (on 15 min crons not a overly great pain in the ass but still nice to have the option to go quicker). as you can see with a VPS you are limited by ram you have rather than a small amount of cpu usage.

yes a standard godaddy (or any other host) would sufice to beguin with. but i prefer to keep things as simple as possable, and i have aprox 250,000 people who play browser games lined up ready to receive info about my website. so i would rather be safer than sorry :p

i am not trying to tell you where to go, or that one place is better than another. i was just mentioning where i am likly to go.

nope :)

exact amount atm, 258,944

granted there are possably doubles in there. as they are from 2 groups of people. i also have access to a few forums with a couple of 100 members across the board. (some i know spend ALOT opf money on these kinds of games)

i have done alot of researching into server hosts, SEO and have formed my target audience :) im not in this just for my enjoyment of games and web design ;)

i also have people in other countries ready to advertise for me :) and best of all, all this advertisment costs sod all ^^

is just a matter of time :)

What!!!!???

I have not read anywhere where godaddy limits CPU. I have quite a bit of traffic going to all my sites and no problem so far. BUT if you have that many possible players you are correct in getting something more. The rest of us will do fine on a simple web host.
