so i cant make my game open to the public unless i pay?
if you love something, let it go.
if it doesnt return.....hunt it down and kill it.

If there are FREE ones out there, I haven't found any, so I would have to say, yes, you cant make ur game open to the public unless you pay. Unless someone here knows otherwise, of course.

depends on how you want to make it open. You could completely give away the source on sourceforge for free. But if you mean controlling and running the playing environment that players experience, yeah you have to pay.

This is why completely free, non-item shop MMORPGs are so rare. It costs them something to run the game, and if they don't even take donations, they are eating those costs. Even if they own the servers and are hosting the game themselves, your average home ISP does not allow you to run a game server. That means you have to get a commercial account, and then that is expensive as well (most commercial ISP plans do not include unlimited bandwidth, because they know commercial accounts could be using the max 24/7/365).

So there are definitely costs. Some game admins try to ask for donations, but that can be very difficult to get people to pay anything. Everyone just assumes that someone else will donate to keep the game going.

You can't host a gameserver off of a website. You need the ability to execute files to run a gameserver. If its a browser based game, then you should be good though.
