Don't know if it's been mentioned here or not (couldn't find it anyway), but there's a guy doing a series on coding a complete game from scratch in c++. And he explains how and why he's doing it as he goes.
He does it in livestreams, but then posts it to YouTube each day. He's up to day 91 so far. There's a lot of info here if you have the time to check it out.

I remember seeing something about this on GameDev, but I didn't think he was that far into it. Maybe they just didn't communicate that well.
