Building a game engine

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

So I have decided to take a break from game development. I am not getting much done and I am more interested in challenging myself with coding vs graphics. I want to get back to doing what I seem to do best. Helping others make games.

So thinking of a web based game "maker"/engine what genre do you think would interest people more? I obviously cannot do a make all types as that would take significantly longer. This is going to be fully multiplayer.

RTS
RPG
Side Scroller
other?

I was leaning towards a RTS as there are no other engines out there but not quit sure.

I just purchased http://rpgcreator.net/ and I got to use it for 20 minutes before the DB had an error and now no one can log in. Go figure. it is however very awesome when working and I recommend anyone using RPG Maker to give it a try or wait for mine to release :ugeek:

Next question, I plan on releasing this for free but with that there is little support. If I charge I could pay people here to help out. Should I charge? How much for a multiplayer RPG engine? I know that question gets answered when the engine is more complete so mostly just asking what would you pay or would you rather see it free with less support?

And lastly is there any interest in this or should I just stick with making videos on how to make the game?

I think a MMO type engine would be a huge hit. Also, I think two versions, one free and one paid, would be a good option. Maybe like a "trial" version.

Hard to do with javascript and such unless you do some kind of script builder on a site. I am leaning more towards totally free.

Also I forgot to mention I am also leaning towards real time html5 canvas type.

That'd be cool. Also, I think I kind of deluded my ideas there. I don't mean like a timed trial, I mean like one version with alot of stuff stripped, but just enough for it to function and work but then have the paid version.

But then again I'm a stingy (illegitimate child), so take that into accuont :D
