Need your experienced advice

Post by espe »

Hey,

at the moment, im doing too much at the same time. I mean searching for engines, learning php, think about the concept... but doesnt finish anything. Maybe you could poke me in the right way? :)

What i want is...
creating a browsergame. a fantasy-settet browsergame wich makes a lot of fun.

features should be...
choose your race and class while registering to make it easy for everyone to start easy and get fast into the game (avatargenerator needed).
after that, get an tutorial how the quests goes in wich you fight against monster automatically to end a normal quest (quests will use energy, a bit more energy for some real money).
then get in love with the arena, where you fight against other players automatically where the hp are full every time and only some gold and arena points will be "traded" (display this fight would be really nice). to win easier, buy some items in the shops and equip em (hunt for ancient item-sets, yay!).
at least, search for an guild and spend some of your money to upgrade some guild-buildings for more xp and gold from quests (who get the "longest building"?). start a guild fight, where the players fight against each other automatically one for one or something like that.
in the future, include achievements, dungeons with boss monsters and special guild dungeons (so cool).

Ill stop the funny (comments) now. What do you experienced programmers think is a good way to reach this goal of a fun bringing browsergame?
Is it much to code? Maybe the detailed things are the breaking point in this. This things have to be user friendly of course... all the items need graphics, the quests need text and the displayed fights could u some sounds. sounds like a job for a company, but im alone! :(

help me :geek:

Ok, i do programming for 4 years now, but im not a pro yet, so here's a semi-pro tip:

Regarding the type and genre of the game you want to make, i think it's best to watch all halls tutorials on Browser based MMORPG.
It will help you with 90% of things you want to make.

About the avatar generator, you can use the php image functions to create that. I used them for a captcha generator.. Just google :)

About the work load, i think if you follow halls's tutorials and understand them, you will make it in less than a year. Gather some team to make the graphics and sounds that you need, and focus on coding. I'm making my Village Wars Game / Engine for 5 months now, and i did all things by myself or help from the indie-resource community, or even help from google, google is a nice guy.

Good Luck.

I agree with Vitinho! You can spend months trying to find the "perfect engine", but the reality is none will fit your every need. You will end up having to program some features from scratch. If the best you can find only covers about 50% of the features you want, you are probably better off starting from scratch, because you could have made the other 50% in the time it takes to fully know the engine well enough to edit it (that typically holds true for browser-game engines, but definitely not for 3D game engines lol).

Like he said, watch Halls' tutorials several times, and then try to code along with it. Once you completely understand everything going on it and why it is the way it is, you will be able to program any of these features you want :)
