Konnichiwa?

Post by AuspiciousRainbow »

Hai XD
im here to learn...yes..learn how to make browser games for both the computer and maybe later on down the road the smart phones.
my dad has a game idea...he always has game ideas...but he never acts on them. hes defeated before he starts.
so my goal is to inspire him and start the ball rolling. be the game code monkey as it were...and when he sees what a pretty basic game i made ill take it a step further and flesh out a game idea he had and then hell be inspired! then he will see!

ive no idea how to make a game, but im pretty computer literate, ive built websites before with html in notepad haha back before they had the fancy programs like dreamweaver that practicly write the code for you, boy that would have been nice! hah
I draw, so my art would be integrated with any games i might make. i even have a fancy digital tablet (totally awesome by the way..ive got a intuos 4 by Wacom)
a good portion of my family is a bunch of nerds, they love games and always whine when theres bugs and stupid things that certain games do that they shouldnt...they always talk about "well if i was making this game i would make it so this! and this!"

well im sick of talk, and the procrastination that comes with it lol

Ive been doing some various basic flash tutorials, because id like to make games with flash, i dont know how to go about that though.
ive done alot of graphics design in the past with photoshop, im pretty good at it XD.
so i need some direction and more know how, i love to learn, especially when it deals with computers! (i often understand them more than people..lol)

id appreciate any and all help that is an will in the future be given by this site, it looks promising. there are so little tutorials that target us beginners its daunting...good thing im stubborn..hah

My name is Meonah
and here goes being a chick codemonkey..haha!

Welcome to the forums :)

I wish my family was a bunch of nerds lol. I am really the only one I know of in my family, except maybe my uncle, but he is not a gamer nerd. That also sounds pretty interesting that your dad has a lot of game ideas but never acts on them, so you are looking to get the ball rolling. I would absolutely love if my dad was into game development and we could work on ideas together lol.

As far as game development goes, I would select a Flash game engine to use. Yes, Flash provides a lot of the low-level details for you, but when it comes to making a complex game, basic Flash leaves too much in your responsibility, so I suggest choosing a good engine. Here is a list of good ones. I suggest Flixel or Flashpunk for 2D games (and I would suggest to start with 2D, at least to learn). Both are solid engines that handle literally weeks of work for you out of the box, such as game time management (to keep animations in line on computers of different specs), physics, collisions (when things touch each other and how they react), pathfinding (how enemies find you), etc.

Best of luck and see you on the forums! 8-)

Welcome,

I think an important thing is to appreciate what you've done as an accomplishment. Even a hellow world program - it's too easy to think of that as nothing. Instead it should be treated as an accomplishment. Treat every element you add as an accomplishment - don't fall into the trap of thinking only when you finish the entire game have you accomplished something! Little, constant victories will encourage you!

That's my encouragement advice! Have fun on this forum! :)

thanks alot for your input. i dont even know what an 'engine' is. but it seems its necessary for game development lol. thanks for the list, ill check them out and poke around a bit and see if i can make heads or tails of it.

thanks for stopping by and putting your two cents in. i think that does matter to have those little victories. ive already made little animated things for my dad to see all by myself! XD i dunno if hes impressed or not...i thought hed find it cool at least...but even if hes not gonna say its cool or whatever im gonna do it anyway just because i love to learn and im curious lol.
this is the game i look to create in the end, something that lets you create your own undead army, vampires, werewolves, zombies, liches all that good stuff. build stuff and collect resources. i also want to integrate some light pet stuff for those of us who like those pets and farm things..only they will be farming undead resources and tending to undead cattle and such ..haha i think it will be fun.

i know its basic, but i think itll be interesting

Your welcome!

An "engine" is like a skeleton for a game, plus a library of functions you can use to reduce the work you have to do yourself. Almost every major, traditional game today uses an engine :)

The idea sounds cool, too!

I'm sure your dad will be proud of what you've done there - but keep in mind, he is his own human being and can have different tastes in stuff. I'm sure you can connect as family over what is made, but even dads aught to be free to be his own person as well and you as well. When your free to be your own person, your not going to perfectly align all the time - so make sure not to let future projects hinge on some sort of perfect alignment occuring.
