Must....breath....

Post by Jackolantern »

Ok, this semester I am taking a beginning computer course because it is required for further computer science courses. We are now learning HTML, and the page I just had to make is making me want to cry :cry:

Now I do understand why we are having to make a page like this. First, the page instruction were probably made years ago when this would have been a good, cutting-edge page. Second, this is just a tiny taste of HTML designing, and 99% of the people in this class won't ever write another line of HTML in their lives. And third, learning CSS and web standards is far beyond the scope of this class.

But without further ado, this is the page that is making me class at my skin:

Code: Select all

<html>
	<head>
	<title>Scott's Page</title>
	</head>

	<body bgcolor=turquoise text=blue>
	<p>
	<h1>Scott's Page</h1>
	<p><center><img src="eagle.gif"></img></center>
	<h2>My Favorites</h2><p>
	Food: Chocolate <br>
	Sport: Football <br>
	Color: Green <br>
	Movie: Shrek <br>
	Website: <a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a><br>
	<h2>News Flash</h2><p>
	My sister is getting married in September
	<h2>Quote of the Day</h2>
	The best things in life are free, but it takes a lot of time and money before you find this out.
	<p>
	<h2>My Schedule</h2>
	<table border="3" width=75%>
		<tr>
			<td>Mon</td>
			<td>Tues</td>
			<td>Wed</td>
			<td>Thu</td>
		</tr>
		<tr>
			<td>Class at 10</td>
			<td>Class at 9</td>
			<td>Class at 10</td>
			<td>Class at 9</td>
		</tr>
		<tr>
			<td>Work</td>
			<td>Study</td>
			<td>Work</td>
			<td>Study</td>
		</tr>
	</table>

	<h2>Hints for making good grades in class</h2>
	<ol>
		<li>Read the chapter
		<li>Work the exercises
		<li>Work the assignment
	</ol><p>
	<h2>Some things I have found helpful for school</h2>
	<ul>
		<li>Purchase your books by the first day of class
		<li>Purchase school supplies as soon as possible
		<li>Find a good place to study
	</ul>

	</body>
</html>

I was going to freak out and go off on a tangent of all the problems in it, but instead, how about a fun little game like Hidden Pictures?

So, who can find all the problems in this HTML document compared to modern web standards? I will tell you there are a lot of problems in it!

Haha! Oh, I know there really is nothing wrong with this markup for this level of class :lol: More that it was just hard to make my fingers type it because it is breaking my entire rulebook lol

I for one still love tables and man they make life so easy when using them with Divs so no complaints there but the <p> and the <l> and the others can all go to <h>

Actually, the way the table is used really isn't a problem, since a schedule is a basically tabular data. However, the book info said that the <p> tag adds a blank line.... No it doesn't! It creates block-level content! While I understand using formatting tags instead of CSS at this level, there is no reason for giving completely wrong info about such a common tag!

Yeah well we still tell kids that Christopher Columbus discovered america and he was the first one to think the world was round. We tell them Franklin invented electricity and spend whole chapters talking about Edison yet only dedicate a quarter of a paragraph talking about the greatest genius Telsa.

So I am not surprised.
