What would you rather play?
1. A 2d top down MMO with a downloadable client around 100-300megs. Things like lighting and particle spell effects and such. Would have guilds, shops, auctions, partying, ect..Would have downloadable patches and things you would have to download.
2. A 2d top down single player through the browser with some multiplayer options like auctions and player owned shops. Effects would be limited and would be single player dungeon crawling. No patching or downloading, could play from anywhere.

I would love to play the first one! Seems very fun and worth the download!

I'd rather play #1.
However, the #2 option is similar to a project I've been considering lately. Another fellow on these boards was recreating the Oregon Trail game and posted for it for us to play. Recently I've been thinking it would interesting to see that game turned into a really detailed browser-based MMO with RPG advancement. 3-4 month round times, timers to complete work (as opposed to just clicking the "hunt" button and instantly being shown the results), points for helping out your fellow settlers, combat with indians, bandits, renegades... etc. Log in a few times/day to set what kind of work you want done for the day, or to see your progress along the trail.

thanks for the replies.
Yeah I also have a Oregon Trail project on here but it was called Apocalypse Trail. Was a Future version. Actually worked on it some last week.

I would like to play the first one but I have a mac so I don't think I would be able to play it.
The second one doesn't sound too bad, but seems kinda limited.

I can really go for either one, provided the downloadable game offers more than could be done in the browser. It sounds like you have that in check
However, know that by making it downloadable, you are locking out potential players who play at work or school on public computers. It also limits you from ever integrating it into Facebook or game portal sites.

agreed. Exactly what i was thinking. Browser provides so many more players and adds in MAC and Linux players.

It also massively limits the barrier to entry. Sometimes you are just holding people's interest by a hair when they want to try your game, and if they can play instantly, that makes them much more likely to try it out.

Re: What would you rather play?
In all honesty I have passed up a ton of games due to having to download a client, even small clients.
